And after he's said it 30 or 40 times, he's made a real issue of it. Willkie's the fellow who's going to put nine million men to work — I'll vote for him.' The sensation thus created may once again provide a summary title of "Strictly Political" as an assignation for FDR, in view of a record worth recalling. The FDR views, re- surrected from secreted tapes, overlooked basic facts. So did the partisan Judge Rosenman. In May of 1940, during the Presidential campaign, this commentator was with Willkie who then made some strong comments on Zionism, the relevance of Jewish statehood, the need for relaxing immigration rules for escapees from Nazism. One of the sessions this commentator had with Willkie was during his visit in Detroit when he spoke at the Book Cadillac Hotel. The meeting was picketed by the arch-bigots of the era. The Jewish News report of that incident related the fol- lowing: "Wendell L. Winkle, standard, bearer of the Republican Party, and Mrs. Dudley C. Hay, Re- publican National Com- mittee Member for Michigan, indirectly came in for distinct hon- ors on Sunday, when the reception that was ar- ranged for Willkie was picketed by followers of Gerald L.K. Smith, in front of the Book Cadillac Hotel. "A group of about 20 men and women, who were iden- tified as Smith followers, paraded in front of the hotel, carrying banners repudiat- ing Willkie and Mrs. Hay as Republican leaders. • per person double occ. • HEATED THERAPEUTIC WHIRLPOOL CALL FREE to MIAMI BEACH 800 - 327-8165 Entire Oceanfront Block 37th to 38th Sts MIAMI BEACH Phone 13051 531 -0061 \ SAM SCHECHTER Owner Mgmt Mini•Vacations. One of the most distin- guished Jewish leaders, Abba Hillel Silver, cam- paigned vigorously against FDR's quest for a Third Term. He was among Willkie's strongest suppor- ters. A headline during the campaign in the Cleveland Press stated "Silver r Third Term, Willkie." The article and subsequent ones quoted Rabbi Silver extensively. ps i O LUDWIG LEWISOHN An interesting recollec- tion: Dorothy Thompson, who in that period was among the staunchest of Christian Zionists, was in Detroit to address an anti- Nazi rally at Olympia Stadium. She was greeted by an audience of 12,000. That very night, Ludwig Lewisohn spoke at the Sab- bath Eve service at the Bnai David synagogue on 14th and Elmhurst. As the two friends met afterwards at the Statler Hotel, she told him and this commentator that Willkie was distressed. Willkie had recently asked her Why 80 percent of the Jews are support- ing Roosevelt. Willkie emphasized his life-long record of liberalism and friendship for the Jews: She replied, her words being from memory: "Wendell, if you knew all Roosevelt did for the Jews, you'd wonder why not 95 percent." The judgment of the many factors for FDR, for Jews, for Nazi sufferers, is now being rendered. As to Willkie: He did not give any indication of being of the Hitler-mind or a Fas- cist. Those who knew him treated him as a liberal. His record of his life does not support the exposed FDR tapes. Negating a President ticklish business. Tai into view is the fact that FDR was a shrewd politi- cian. What was taped was stated during a political campaign. Therefore this judgment: the new sensa- tion is "Strictly Politics!" . RABBI SILVER "Smith's secretary, Bar- nard L. Doman, is said to have arranged the picket line." Of unusual interest is the linking of the report from which this is quoted with an accompanying photo. It was of Wendell Willkie and Henrietta Szold, the foun- der of Hadassah. Regretta-, bly, the aged clipping is not reproducable, else the photo would have added current value. The photo lines read: "Wendell L. Willkie and another eminent Ameri- can, Miss Henrietta Szold, are shown here ex- changing views on the Jewish position, during Mr. Willkie's visit in Palestine."
