OF YOUR UNWANTED USED FURS Ad Did Not Present a Choice EI-Mars Marion Suburban Shop Feuerman Editor, The Jewish News A large advertisement, in the Jewish News (Jan. 8, Page 25), beginning, "To All Rabbis, Presidents . ." placed by the "World Jewish Referendum," invites lead- ers to make a choice be- tween a western, demo- cratic, state of Israel with a potential Arab majority, or a Jewish-Zionist state, con- trolled by Jews with or without democracy for the Arab people. (Across from A&P) Open 6 Days 11-5 pin. .;losed Saturday No phone calls please I viewed these choices with disgust. The ad further states that it is "obvious" there is an "irreconcilable contradic- tion between western democracy and a Jewish- Zionist state." This is not the view of any but the most extreme Israelis, who daily participate in Israeli society, a classic example of the democratic process. This ad is pernicious, and guilty of the most rigid, inflexible view of history and future. The survey presents the two most extreme cases, uses a demographic canard to support its weak logic — that of a high Arab, low Jewish birth rate, low aliya, high yerida — takes no other factors into ac- count, and asks us to make a choice. I am reminded of the hor- rific stories of concentration camps, where a mother is forced by Nazis to choose which of her sons will live, which will be killed. In the end, both die. But what a choice to be faced with. My choice, is instead, to work to help Americans to make successful aliya, to encourage Jews to have larger families, more im- portantly to educate their children in Hebrew and as strong, proud, active Jews, and to promote awareness among Jews of the impor- tance of Israel to the healthy survival of the Jewish people. I, and many others, have chosen to work towards these real and attainable goals, through the practical program of the Zionist movement, and have affil- iated ourselves politically with that movement, in order to create the kind of Jewish future in which such choices will not be neces- sary. We are always faced with the •abyss in some dim and dark future, and should we fail, we may indeed be faced with such a horrible choice. That day is not today, but I urge all Jews to take heed of the possibility; and to work in actual concrete ways to build up the state of Israel — with the investment of their children, their capital, their own daily lives -- to ensure that day never ar- rives.
