Its massive staircase
that still remains in the
two-level restaurant was
one he had hoped would
be the setting for his own
movie-like scene wheri
his granddaughter got
married . . Instead, she
eloped and was wed
without fanfare.

you outside . . . but this
was winter and cold air is
not very conducive to what a
deep south greeting would
afford.
However, the house was
there . . . something al-
most directly out of the
pages of "Gone With The
Wind" . . . No, this wasn't
Tara . . . but the very im-
posing _White House Manor
on Novi Rd. and Nine Mile
Rd. . . . a part of Novi his-
tory . . . with an imposing
110-foot Blue Spruce tree,
tallest in Michigan, on the
front lawn . . . This was
once known . in the early
1800's as Thornton Farms.
The elegant mansion
stands in all its grandeur on
a beautiful site that in-
cludes the original far-
mhouse . . . The home's
first owner and creator,
Charles E. Rogers, was cre-
dited with inventing con-
densed milk.

White House Manor,
opened Jan. 13, 1981 . . . It
is located just behind the
72,000 sq. ft. office and
warehouse owned by Irwin
Arkin.
Through the typical colo-
nial entrance, with its
leaded glass door and side
windows, guests are awed
by the ambience of this fine
old mansion . . . cher-
rywood banister, original
floor plan of the Rogers,
home (each of the rooms
were converted into private
dining areas that afford a
great deal of intimacy and
privacy).
Gracious smiles and serv-
ice are among the warmth of
White House Manor . . .
Greeting us was hostess
Ruth Larkin . . . (hostess
Linda Johnson was off this
day) . . . as we went into
one of the 'very pleasant
rooms.
White House Manor
has 11,000 square feet
that includes seven
rooms, two lounges, a
lower level for banquets
and an attic . . . Every
room of the former man-
sion, including closets,
have been utilized . .
and all the aged wood has
been retained - . . . Each
of the rooms has its own
personality . . . carpet-
ing, drapes and
wallpaper different and
matching the areas they
are in.
The elegance of White
House Manor is quiet re-
finement . . . with people
undecided on whether to
admire the atmosphere or
their food.
Sandra Nobel was our ef-
ficient, pleasant waitress
. . . bringing bread basket
with breadsticks, warm gar-
lic toast and rolls, seafood
chowder, salad with both
creamy and dry Rocquefort,
sorbet to cleanse the palate,
Veal Cordon Bleu . . . and a
delightful glass of white
wine.
Head chef at White House
Manor is John Kring . .
assisted by Ralph Green-
wood, who prepared our
meal.
The joint venture . . .
Irwin Arkin's property
and Luigi "Gino" Cervi's
restaurant . . . seats 185
plus private banquet
rooms . . . It is managed
by Steve Styliano . . .
with Brian Butcher,
assistant manager.
People love the salad
entrees which are served in
ceramic shells . . . the di-
versified menu and elegant
mansion atmosphere are
poignant for a pleasant din-
ing experience.
White House Manor has
entertainment on Fridays
and Saturdays . . . It is
open for lunch Monday
through Saturday 11:30 to 3
. . happy hour Monday
through Saturday 3 to 6
. . . Dinner hours, Monday
through Thursday 5:30 to
10 . . . F-riday and Satur-
day 5:30 to 11 . . . Cocktail
lounge open Monday
through Saturday til clos-
