JERUSALEM — Ros
Gelcer and Yishai Eldar
have been doing "Calling
All Listeners" on Kol Yis-
rael's overseas (short wave)
service for so long that they
hardly need a script for
their light banter.
Since American-born
Yishai Eldar, with his ow-
lish spectacles and his air of
astonishment at the in-
anities of the world, took
over the program, it has
taken the top spot in the
popularity ratings of the
English language overseas
broadcasts.
"It's a question of style,"
he says, and South African
born Ros agrees. That style,
as Yishai puts it, is "zany,
informal, irreverent."

not to offend and we do
deal with serious issues
in replying to listeners
questions. Religion, of
course — religions, I
should say — politics,
anti-Semitism, racism,
we're always being asked'
about them. And then the
basic questions about Is-
rael: the geography, cli-
mate, nature, way of life.
There are comments on
our programs, and they
give us some listener
feedback."
The piles of incoming
mail are the best way the
English department of Kol
Yisrael has of keeping a
finger on the pulse of its lis-
teners. Reception reports
from the technically-
minded listeners help the
technicians at the transmit-
ters to decide on the best
frequencies. Letters, with
interesting questions are
passed to Yishai for "Cal-
ling All Listeners."
"Calling All Listeners,"
until February, can be
heard at 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9
p.m. over the following
short wave frequencies:
5 p.m. — 15105, 11960,
11640 and 9815 kHz; 7 p.m.
— 21760, 21495 and 17612
kHz; 9 p.m.— 12025, 11960,
11640 and 9815 kHz.
Kol Yisrael broadcasts
programs in English
seven times daily. It also
broadcasts programs in
15 other languages. The
schedule changes every
three months.

ing list for the schedule,

NEW YORK — "A Com-
prehensive Guide to Chil-
dren's Literature with a
Jewish Theme" (Schoken)
by Enid Davis is a hard-
cover reference volume con-
taining over 400 reviews,
100 additional listings of
multi-media and periodical
resources, plus a directory
of book publishers and dis-
tributors.
The book opens with an
introductory essay on the
value of these books for the
Jewish child and all chil-
dren. Each subject category
— Bible stories, history, fic-
tion, holidays, biographies,
etc. is preceded by a chapter
packed with supplemental
information.
Entries are indexed by
author title, and subject and
the annotation for each is
lively and personalized.
Davis has included pub-
lishers, prices, and dates of
publication, along with
suggested age ranges.
A chapter on selecting
books for home or institu-
tional libraries makes this
work an invaluable aid to
librarians, book and gift
shop buyers, and parents
trying to build a fine
juvenile home library as a
legacy for generations to
come.
Congressman Long Raps
U.S. Policy in the Mideast
DALLAS (JTA) — Rep.
Clarence Long (D-Md.),
chairman of. the House
Appropriations Subcom-
mittee on Foreign _Opera-
tions and the initiator of the
bill in the House to stop the
sale of AWACS to Saudi
Arabia, warned that the
Saudis have "an extremely
delicate regime and could be
easily overthrown."
He also told several
hundred Zionist Organiza-
tion of America leaders
from throughout the coun-
try attending a special na-
tional executive committee
meeting in Dallas that "in
recent years, American
foreign policy has been
wrong in the Middle East,
for while trying to protect
Israel, the sale of sophisti-
cated weapons to Israel's
enemies is counter to help-
ing Israel."
Ivan Novick, ZOA
president, who said the spe-
cial meeting had been called
to express "great concern
regarding U.S. Administra-
tion actions toward Israel,"
called for separating per-
sonalities from politics in
Israel as well as is the
United Staes.
Novick also said that
"if Prime Minister Begin
were not in office, basic
differences between Is-
rael's position and that of
the Administration
would still exist." He
,
cited the failure of the
U.S. to move its embassy
from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem.
But Novick also warned
that "if we set recent
rhetoric aside, and even dis-
count Israeli action and the
Administration's reaction,
what remains appears to be
a fundamental difference in
basic approach between Is-
rael and the Administra-
tion."
Novick said Administra-
tion officials "demon-
strated, in their public tr''m
vision appearances, the'_
sence of real statesmanship.
In public view, they ex-
pressed a desire for reconci-
lation.
