Government sources ex- plained over the weekend that what was envisaged was not a full-scale commis- sion of inquiry chaired by a Supreme Court Justice (like the post-Yom Kippur War Agranat Commission) but a more modest panel, termed an "investigating commit- tee," which is also provided for under the law. The committee will be appointed by Justice Minis- ter Moshe Nissim, who will ,consult with both Interior Minister Yosef Burg (who has responsibility for the police) and Education Minister Zevulun Hammer (who has statutory respon- sibility for the Broadcasting Authority. Modai wants both the police and the television news department to be looked into with a view to BlOCkis Clothes Sidewalk Sale JAN. 14-17, THURS.-SUN. preventing in the future publication of allegations that are later proved groundless. In Modai's case, Israel TV last week published as its headline story a report based on a police statement that the police fraud squad was "gathering intelligence data" about accusations that Modai had taken kickbacks from state oil deals during his term as minister of energy (1977- 1981). Modai claims that the police , statement was in- accurate and that the TV news desk played it tenden- tiously. Two days later At- torney General Yitzhak Zamir and the police issued subsequent statements to- tally clearing Modai by ex- plaining that the "data" in the hands of the police con- tained no substantive mate- rial. The "data" was appar- ently given to the police by Labor MK Yehuda Hashai who three months ago submitted a Knesset question to the prime minister on the same sub- ject. Modai has said he would sue Hashai for libel were it not for his parliamentary immunity. Modai criticized Zamir's handling of the affair, charging him with "insen- sitivity." Modai said in an interview that Zamii -need not have waited 48 hours before publicly clearing him, since he knew all along that Hashai's "data" was unsubstantiated. According to the London Jewish Chronicle, univer- sity officials cited a lack of demand as the reason for the closing. However, that claim is disputed by those directly involved with the section. Some 20 students are currently enrolled in section courses. The Hebrew section, which is nearly 100 years old, will allow the current students to graduate, but 641%.:" • :."...=41 FIRESTONE JEWELRY Wholesale Diamonds & Jewelry Remounting Jewelry & Watch Repair will halt new admissions following the 1981-1982 academic year. Towards the end of the 1981 indoor tennis season Ricky Meyer of Long Island, N.Y., teamed up with El Shafei, Egypt's best player, in doubles at the $75,000 Sofia Grand Prix court fes- tival in Bulgaria and they reached the doubles final before they were knocked out. This tournament marked the first time that Meyer won an accredited Tennis Association tourney and he pulled down $12,000. In addition, he picked up a handsome fee for going to the final round with the Egyptian. Meyer reports that Shafei and the other Egyptian tennis perfor- mers are more than happy to meet with and play the Israeli stars. Right now Shloino Glick- stein is Israel's top rated players and has worked his way in to the top 50 court performers in the world's rankings so that sooner or later he will be playing with and against Egyptian ten- nis stars.
