Israel's Exports to America
Rise as Inflation Rate Dips

NEW YORK — While Is-
rael's exports to the U.S.
rose by 28 percent last year,
the country's inflation rate
declined from 133 percent to
100 percent during 1981,
according to figures re-
leased by the Israel Eco-
nomic Mission.
Exports to the U.S. have
topped the $1 billion mark
for the first time in a single
year and may go as high as
$1.25 billion, according to
Uri Oren, spokesman for
the mission.
Particularly strong, he
said, were high-technology
products including elec-
tronics, avionics, lasers,
solar energy devices, com-
puter software and medical

DAMASCUS — Resolu-
tions by the Arab League
Labor Organization calling
for unspecified sanctions
against U.S. diplomatic
missions and interests in
the Middle East and the use
of oil as a political weapon
have been endorsed by Sy-
rian President Hafez al-
Assad.
The labor group, com-
prised of the heads of Arab
trade unions, ended their
three-day conference here
last weekend by calling for
the sanctions and also for
"strikes at the interests and
embassies of European na-
tions whose stands are simi-
lar to those of America and
encourage Israel."

equipment. Leading the list
of consumer items was gold
jewelry. Furniture, printing
materials and food products
also did well, Oren said,
while exports of polished
diamonds declined in re-
sponse to the worldwide
diamond recession.
For the first 11 months of
1981, the consumer price
index rose 95.5 percent,
compared to 119.8 percent
for the same period in 1980.
For the full year, inflation is
expected to decline from
132.9 percent in 1980 to 100
percent in 1981, he said.

UJA Film Takes
Bronze Medal
at NY Festival

NEW YORK — "The
Town I Knew," a film
featurette produced by the
United Jewish Appeal, was
awarded a bronze medal at
the 1981 International Film
and TV Festival.
The film, conceived, di-
rected and produced by Is-
sahar Miron, director of the
UJA's Creative and Educa-
tional Programs Depart-
ment, won the honor in two
categories, fund raising and
art and music.
Based on the song, "The
Town I Knew," with He-
brew lyrics by Haim Hefer,
English lyrics by Lan
O'Kun and music by Miron,
the film is a memorial trib-
ute to a town razed during
the Holocaust and to all
those martyrs who
perished.

Creation Bill
German Jewish
Village Restoring Would Be Vetoed
Governor
Michigan
Communal Center William
Milliken told re-

BONN (JTA) — The
small Jewish community of
Braunschweig has begun
renovating and restoring its
community center.
The construction of the
two million Mark project
may take three years and
funds are in short supply.
The town of Braunschweig
will contribute one million
Marks. A major part of the
additional sum needed
might be financed through a
public program supporting
cultural projects.

porters last week that he
would veto any bill requir-
ing Michigan schools
teach Creationism.
Milliken said he was
happy with a U.S. District
Court decision overturning
an Arkansas law requiring
such teaching.
State Rep. Alan L. Crop-
sey (R-DeWitt) said he and
State Senator Ed Fredricks
(R-Holland) intend to intro-
duce such legislation in
spite of the Arkansas rul-
ing.
