Israeli officials also re- called that Riyadh engaged in similar on again - off again exercises in the last few months. In mid- November, Saudi Arabia's acting delegate to the United Nations, Gaafar Al- lagany, said that Fand's plan recognized Israel by af- firming, in the seventh point of the plan, "the right of the countries of the region to live in peace." Two days later this view was officially disavowed by "an official E. F. HUTTON . We are pleased to announce that LAWRENCE S. Four days later he claimed that he had been misquoted and a month later called for a holy war against Israel. The Times report said Prince Saud continued to insist that American pol- icy fostered Israeli in- transigence. The new idea is to kill the malaria parasite present in the body by poisoning it with its own waste products. Profs. Hagai Ginsburg and Z. Ioav Cabantchik hit upon the idea in the course of their experiments on the host-parasite relationship. Malaria parasites, when they invade red blood cells, produce lac- tic acid at 150 times the rate of their host's red blood cell. Normally, this toxic acid is excreted from the cell by means of transport mechanisms in the cell membrane. Scientists know that there are two mechanisms which transport lactic acid in the cell membrane, each independent of the other. In healthy blood cells, only one of these systems is needed to get rid of the lactic acid. In malaria-infected cells, when the rate of production of lactic acid increases greatly, the usual excretory SUPERMAN II PRIVATE BENJAMIN ALTERED STATES • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • — RENT THESE MOVIES OR CHOOSE FROM 100's OF OTHER GREAT MOVIES $35.00 Membership Fee VIDEO PLUS • •• • • • • • • • 569-2330 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • O • • • • • • •,• • • 110 • • •,• 0 • • . 12 Mile at Evergreen Open 7 Days system becomes saturated and the second system is pressed into service and does the job. But what happens when the second excretory system stops working? Profs. Ginsburg and Cabantchik found that the toxic lactic acid which is not excreted from the cell destroys the invading malaria parasite. So, if a way can be found temporarily to stop the ac- tion of the lactic acid excret- ing mechanism, it should be possible thereby to cure malaria patients without resorting to the traditional anti-malarial treatments — which are either toxic to the patient (quinine) or are no more effective due to drug resistance developed by the parasite. On this assump- tion, Profs. Ginsburg and Cabantchik have started looking for ways to stop the action of the excretory mechanism. They have continued laboratory experiments with drugs designed for completely different needs, but which are known to block the lac- tate excretory mechanisms in red blood cells. Among these are Furosemide, a kidney drug used for treating edema, and Niflumic Acid, an anti- inflammatory drug. Both drugs are inhibitory to parasite growth in cul- tures. Now they are trying to develop other drugs which will affect the excretory mechanism in the cell membrane. If they succeed, they may_ well come up with a completely new drug for malaria. In the course of their re- search, which is supported by the World Health Organ- ization, the World Bank, the UN Development Program and the Wolfson Research Foundation, the scientists also discovered that at a cer- tain stage in its life cycle, after it has invaded the red plained that the islands were part of Zone C, the de- militarized zone under the peace treaty and therefore Egypt was not free to dis- pose of them without refer- ence to Israel as the other party to the peace treaty Right In Your Own Driveway !
