JCCouncil Advises Dearborn
Schools on Map of Mideast

As the result of the in-
volvement of the Jewish
Community Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit, correc-
tions are being made in a
Dearborn School District
manual on bi-lingual edu-
cation.
The booklet contained a
map, intended to show
Arabic speaking nations,
entitled "The Arab World."
On the map, each country in
the Middle East is identified
in bold type, except Israel.
Israel is listed in small type
as Palestine (Israel).
In a letter to Dearborn
Schools superintendent Dr.
Douglas B. Lund, Council
Executive Director Alvin L.
Kushner stated that Israel
is a sovereign nation, rec-
ognized by the United
States and the United Na-
tions.

Kushner argued that to
portray Israel in any
other fashion is mislead-
ing and serves to distort
reality. The letter went on
to explain that there is
currently no political en-
tity known as Palestine,
which was the name
given to the British man-
date prior to the estab-

lishment of Israel and
Jordan.
In response to Kushner's
letter, Dr. Lund has in-
formed Council that the
map will be revised to cor-
rectly identify Israel and
show its proper location in
the region.
The revised map will be
distributed to all building
principals in the district,
who will be instructed to
paste the revision over the
original. In addition, Dr.
Lund has agreed in the fu-
ture to distribute only the
revised editions of the
brochure.
