Brodhead promised to
consult with his colleagues
and to continue these ef-
forts, and seek ways "to pre-
vent the Administration
from forcing on Israel pro-
posals which will endanger
its welfare and, perhaps, its
very existence."

Replying to another ZOD
request, to discredit the so-
called Fand "peace" plan
and to urge the President
and the Administration to
permit no substitute for the
Camp David Agreements,
Broomfield, ranking minor-
ity member of the House
Foreign Affairs Committee,
discounted the Fand plan.
"I completely agree with
your position that the Fand
plan does not protect Is-
rael's security and, if it were
adopted, it might lead to Is-
rael's destruction . . . The
PLO is still intent on driv-
ing Israel into the sea . . . No
reasonable person could ask
Israel to make far-reaching
concessions on the West
Bank.
"The Arab summit in
Morocco," said Broom-
field, showed the world
that "the majority of the
Arab nations are not
concerned with reaching
a peaceful settlement
with Israel, rather they
are intent upon destroy-
ing Israel. The burden
is clearly on the Arabs,"
continued Broomfield,
"to accommodate Israel's
needs, not the other way
around ... As far as I am
concerned, the Fand plan
is dead."
Brodhead replied, "I am
puzzled by President
Reagan's policy in the Mid-
dle East and his decision to
embrace (parts of) the Fand
plan . . . The sale of AWACS
to Saudi Arabia and other
actions by the Administra-
tion call into question
American support for our
longtime friend and ally Is-
rael."
Brodhead added, "Our
country is in a unique posi-
tion to use its influence and

the "symbolic value of mov-

BEIRUT — Some 30 Mos-
lem families have been ex-
pelled from their villages
along the Lebanon-Israel
border by Lebanese Chris-
tian militia forces.
The families, which com-
prise nearly 100 people,
have been sent north to the
Moslem port of Tyre.
The Voice of Hope, the
radio station of the
militiamen under the com-
mand of Major Saad Had-
dad, said that the action had
been taken in retaliation for
the kidnapping of eight
Christians from the salient
of Lebanese territory con-
trolled by the militias.
