YOU MAY HAVE seen
her on television . . . or
heard about her . •. . but to
meet Maria Ang and taste
her cooking are distinct
treats in themselves.
People call it gourmet
Oriental dining at Maria
Ang's . . . on Southfield, in
the Farrell Shopping Plaza
. . . and being next door to
Restaurant Duglass it
might naturally be so (al-
though Highway Ribbery
and Px Bar-B-Q were far
from gourmet operations).
However, it is much more
than that . . . You could
also call it natural foods
Oriental cuisine . . . be-
cause of Maria's active
campaign for the elimina-
tion of MSG from processed
foods and the removal of
talcum powder in rice, the
Oriental staple . . . She
continues with her cam-
paign for the eradication of
dangerous additives and
preservatives from proc-
essed foods through food
seminars, cooking demon-
strations and informal nut-
rition workshops.
Maria is actually a
gourmet cateress . . .
Her venture into the res-
taurant business is hear-
tily welcomed by many
who have wanted the
- opportunity to taste the
food they see her make On
TV 2's "Morning Show"
and Channel 7's "Kelly &
Co."
seasoned with fresh lemon
juice, scallions and ginger
shreds.
Even the salad was
different . . . with a very
light peanut butter dressing
. . . And Maria makes all
her own ice cream and des-
serts, including delicious
chocolate almond
cheesecake (unlike other
cheesecake, made with ri-
cotta cheese . . . exotic cus-
tard with caramel topping
. . . and an orange-lime
cheesecake unbelievably
yummy.
There were enough of
us to try a lot of Maria's
cooking . . . and every-
thing was so good . . .
Her Hunan soup might be
a bit too spicy for some,
although she'll cut it
down any way folks like
• • • but Maria's in-
genuity held forth and we
wound up with mines-
trone soup made from all
fresh vegetables.
Then a bevy of delicious-
ness . . . Sizzling Almond
Chicken . . . Pineapple-
Braised Duck (steamed,
wok-fried and braised in a
mildly potent sauce of fresh
ginger, garlic, tamari and
fresh pineapple) . . .
Phoenix Legs Szechuan
(boned chicken legs stuffed
and then baked with a spicy
concoction of Szechuan pep-
percorn, hoisin and oyster
sauces and chili paste (very
hot unless desired other-
wise) . . . Satay Shrimp
(sake-marinated shrimps
broiled with a sesame-
peanut butter glaze) . . .
Honey garlic ribs (baby
back ribs braised in plum
wine, garlic, onions and
molasses, then drizzled with
clover honey).
A big favorite is the
flounder with lemon sauce
. . . delicate fresh fillets
