Alcohol, Drug Related Problems
Not Unknown to Observant Jews

A ZOA Public Affairs Presentation:

"THE CONSPIRACY TO DESTROY ISRAEL"

SHAAREY ZEDEK

The generally accepted
belief, among Orthodox and
non-Orthodox Jews alike,
that observant Jews are
immune to alcohol or drug
addiction has been strongly
disputed by a yeshiva
scholar who has disclosed
that he received help not
only from Alcoholics
Anonymous but also from
an unpublicized agency for
addicts called Pills
AnonymoUs.
The confessional state-
ment, by a Jew using a false
, name, appeared in the No-
vember issue of the "Jewish
Observer," the scholarly

Publication of Agudat Israel
of America, a leading Or-
thodox agency.
Writing under the pen
name of "A B. Cohen," the
youth, described by the
magazine as a young man
attending an advanced
yeshiva in the New York
area, asserted he had been
told by Pittsburgh psychiat-
rists that "The problem of
addition now exists in sig-
nificant proportions in the
Orthodox community."
Cohen wrote he had
been given that evalua-
tion in a personal conver-
sation with Dr. Abraham
Twerski, clinical director
of the psychiatry de-
partment of St. Francis
Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Cohen also declared that
"every Orthodox physi-
cian I have spoken to has
had at least one or more
Orthodox patients who is
pill-dependent or alco-
holic.
Cohen reported his_ diffi-
culties began when he
started having problems of
concentrating during - his
yeshiva classes, which led to
a "barrage of accusations"
from his parnets.
Two years in an Israeli
yeshiva failed to help Cohen
and he began getting
prescriptions for a variety of
mood-altering pills, such as
Valium. He wrote that he
learned the trick of going to
many different doctors for
different prescriptions to
make sure he had enough
pills "to calm the self-hate
and anxiety that were my
steady companions." He be-
came an addict.
He reported that, by
chance, he read a news-
paper report about Pills
Anonymous and began to
attend meetings of the
group. He said he became
aware that there is "a great
deal of cross-addiction for
many people between minor
tranquilizers and alcohol"
and that this included him.
He then joined an AIco-

PARIS (JTA) — Egypt's
Minister of State for
Foreign Affairs, Boutros
Ghali, said in an interview
that his country is still hop-
ing for a European initia-
tive in the Middle East, but
it should be coordinated
with American efforts.
He told the daily, Le
Monde, that the right mo-
ment for such an initiative
might be after Israel com-
pletes_the final stage of its
withdrawal from Sinai
April 26.
He said he would like
see Europe provide the lea
to the Reagan Administra-
tion, "which is still finding
its way in this region" over
Middle East policy next
spring.
This could include trying
to bring about talks be-
tween the Palestinians on
one side and Israel and the
U.S. on the other. •

UN Cites Aguda Member

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — Dr. Isaac Lewin,
representative at the
United Nations of the
Agudath Israel as a non-
governmental organization,
received from Secretary
General Kurt Waldheim
the United Nations Medal
of Peace "in recognition of
his many years of work for a
UN declaration calling for
elimination of all forms of
discrimination and in-
tolerance based on religious
belief."
The declaration was ap-
proved unanimously by the
General Assembly Nov. 25.
Waldheim presented a simi-
lar medal two weeks ago to
Ismat Kittani of Iraq, the
current president of the as-
sembly.
As a member of _the
Human Rights Commis-
sion, Lewin said he had
started his efforts to obtain
such a UN declaration in.
1952.
That commission adopted
his resolution last March
10, with subsequent ap-

Cohen asserted that
"many therapists believe
that when addition
strikes an individual who
subscribes to a culture
that has less overt alco-
holism and addiction, it
will strike him more se-
verely."
He asserted that the con-
viction of immunity in the
Orthodox community
makes it "very difficult" for
the addict or alcoholic to get
help. He wrote that "those of
us who are OrthodOx in
Alcoholics Anonymous or
Pills Anonymous programs
have tried to carry the mes-
sage of recovery to our
coreligionists in need but
we have run up against a
wall of resistance because of
a lack of familiarity" in the
Orthodox community "with
these programs."

However, six members of
the Bir Zeit student council
were confined to their
homes and not allowed to
return to the university.
Their confinement is one of
a series of measures taken
to ensure that no distur-
bances will reoccur on the
politically active campus.
Dr. Hanna Nasser, the
former rector of the univer-
sity, was deported several
years ago and is now a
member of the Palestinian
National Council:
Dr. Gabi Bramky, the,
vice rector, said that he did
not expect any further dis-
turbances on the campus.
He said the university was
reopening unconditionally
with the expiration of the
closure order.

proval by the Economic and
Social Council and by the
UN Third Committee before
the assembly approved it,
thus making it a UN inter-
national declaration.
