Pungan said before the

A DIVISION OF UPTOWN SHOES

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Labor Alignment doves,
concerned by what they see
as a drift to the right within
the party, have joined with
non-aligned leftist and lib-
eral elements to form a
group to counter that trend.
It is called "Ometz" which
means courage and is an ac-
ronym for political Zionist
opposition that could
emerge eventually as a new
politcal faction.
It was promptly dis-
missed by Labor Party
chairman Shimon Peres as
of no importance. But Peres
said he would wait and see if
it turned into a politcal
party before reacting.
He indicated that he
had no objections to a
philosophical study
group within Labor
ranks but warned
against politcal action
that might split the Labor
movement.
But Yossi Sarid, a doveish
Labor MK, told a press con-
ference that Labor was al-
ready badly divided and
confused and the new group
was necessary because the

Begin government is too
dangerous to leave unop-
posed.
He said the decision to
form "Ometz" followed "the
shameful behavior of the
Labor Party over the Golan
bill."
Sarid was referring the
Labor MKs who voted in
favor of the • Likud-
sponsored bill to apply Is-
raeli law to the Golan
Heights on Dec. 14 despite a
party decision to abstain.
Yair Zaban of Mar-
told the press confere.
that too many Laborites
were moving to the right
because they interpreted
Likud's election victory
last June as evidence that
the electorate was mov-
ing to the right.
"In the swamp of
nationalism, clericalism
and social conservatism,
Begin is king," Zaban said.
Shulamit Aloni of the Civil
Rights Movement said that
in the present climate "Th-
ose who call themselves
humanist Zionists or social
democrats cannot get their
views heard."

240M Shekels Approved
for Israel Religious Agencies

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Knesset's finance
committee last week ap-
proved 240 million shekels
(about $16 million) in gov-
ernment funding for
yeshivot, and other reli-
gious institutions affiliated
with the Aguda Israel and
the National Religious
Party.
The measure is expected
to end the quarrel between
Premier Menahem Begin
and his Aguda coalition
partners who complained
that the government was
moving too slowly to pro-
vide the funds it promised
as part of the coalition
agreement.
Their differences were
aggravated when Begin
castigated the Aguda's

Labor Doves Seek to Offset
Perceived Swing to Right

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The joint government-Jew-
ish Agency coordinating
body will discuss ways to
reduce the number of chil-
dren of official emissaries
abroad who study in non-
Jewish public and private
schools.
The issue was raised at
the weekly session of the
World Zionist Organization
Executive by Eli Tavin,
chairman of the department
of education and culture in
the Diaspora.
He said that many Israeli
youngsters whose parents
were sent abroad on gov-
ernment or other public
missions do not attend
Jewish schools. in their local
communities.
According to the written
contract signed by all emis-
saries these school-age chil-
dren must be given a Jewish
and Zionist education while
abroad.

four-man Knesset faction
for abstaining in the vote to
apply Israeli law on the
Golan Heights.
The Mks were acting on

the instructions of the
party's Council of Sages
which considers the
move needlessly pro-
vocative. Begin accused
them of violating the co-
alition pact.

The finance committee
vote, only hours before the
Aguda Israel's World
Executive (Vaad Hapoel)
convened here, is expected
to forestall further criticism
of the government by Aguda
leaders.
Economic sources said
Begin promised the Or-
thodox faction a total of 700
million shekels for its reli-
gious institutions. Finance
committee chairman
Shlomo Lorincz, an Aguda
MK, said the monies voted
would be shared with the
NRP.

Labor
members of the commit-
tee abstained. Labor
sources explained that
they didn't want atten-
tion focused on the di-
vision within the faction
between members who
strongly opposed the

ciple and others pre-
pared to go along NzAkh

Labor is interested in
maintaining good relations
with the Aguda MKs who
have expressed doubts
about some of Begin's
policies.
