A house was burned the previous night and the townspeople, claim- ing they could not afford to buy a fire truck, summoned the fire department from the nearby Arab town of Rafah to put out the blaze. The fires were the latest incidents in the mounting confrontation between the settlers in northern Sinai and the government over compensation for relocating when the region is returned to Egypt next April. The Cabinet remains badly divided over what ac- tion to take to maintain order in Yamit. The resi- dents flatly rejected a Cabinet appeal to resume negotiations for compensa- tion. Appa- rently, they are waiting for a reaction from Premier Menahem Begin who, so far, has. been silent. Deputy Premier and Ag- riculture Minister Simha Erlich, who is in charge of negotiations with the Yamit settlers, charged that the town was being run by a group of hoodlums who are terrorizing the other re- sidents. Ehrlich was supposed to visit Yamit, but both the town leaders and the army said they could not guarantee • his safety. Ehrlich said Yamit bus- inessmen were demand- ing individual payments of 2.2 million shekels (ab- out $150,000) in advance of their relocations, a sum the government could not and would not pay. Sharon, for his part, said he would not be the gov- ernment's "hatchet man" and warned his colleagues not to take any action which the Defense Ministry could not carry out. This was a hint that he would not use force against the Sinai settlers. He also hinted that it would be to Israel's advantage to keep AUDETTE CADILLAC 7100 Orchard Lake Rd. at Northwestern, West Bloomfield (313) 851-7200 PERSONALIZED SERVICE GUARANTEED Zionist Organization of America, Detroit District in cooperation with the Zionist Cultural Center announcing the 6th lecture of the seminar on the History and Philosophy of Zionism The theme: THE BIRTH OF ISRAEL _THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE ZIONISM AT THE CROSS-ROADS Lebturer: EZEKIEL LEIKIN Writer and Lecturer Recipient of ZOA's Brandeis Award for "Exemplary Service" Served with Haganah during British mandate Served with U.S. Military Intelligence in the Near East and Europe Free Admission = Bring Family & 'Friends TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1982 7:45 P.M. Begin, however, has as- sured Egypt that Israel would honor its commit- ment to withdraw on time. That pledge was contained in a letter delivered to Pres- ident Hosni Mubarak. Meanwhile, Yamit ac- tivists reportedly said they would not mind a violent confrontation with the government if it would advance their •de- mands. Some have suggested that Yamit de- clare itself an autonom- ous region. Zamir said he could take no legal action against them because the area is under military jurisdiction. It was learned, mean- while, that the Cabonet re- frained from taking_ decisive action to reduce the threat of a violent confrontation with settlers in north Sinai which must be returned to Egypt next April. Cabinet Secretary Arye Naor said the govern- ment intends to carry out its obligations under the Egyptian-Israeli peace tre- aty to the letter and will complete the evacuation of Sinai next April "with or without the agreement of the good people of the movement to halt the with- drawal." Ehrlich, who is in charge of the Sinai withdrawal, said that if a compensation agreement could be worked out, all residents would be removed by next March 31. He added, however, that no- thing could-be done to pre- vent new residents from moving in and that the squatters were not violating the law by occupying vac- ated houses. He was promptly criticized by opposition members of the Knesset for inviting the Gush Emunim and - other ultra-nationalists to defy the government, making it more difficult to re- move them. Many Yamit residents are willing to move but are holding out for a better offer of compensation from the government for the businesses, homes and farms they will have to abandon. The ideologically moti- vated settlers, their num- bers enlarged by the squat= ters, declare they will not leave Sinai under any cir- cumstances. They are, in fact, repairing greenhouses and farms as if there was no question of evacuating in a few months time. These people, members of the rightwing Tehiya fac- tion, the "Movement to Halt the Withdrawal" and the Gush Emunim are trying to collect one million signa- tures on a petition demand- ing that the government re- nege on the sinai with- drawal clause of its peace treaty with Egypt.
