The policy, described as
unprecedented in the U.S.
by the National Jewish
Commission on Law and
Public Affairs (COLPA),
was challenged in
November 1978 by the
Playcrafters, a Teaneck
high school drama class,
when they learned that
their play "Don't Drink the
Water," could not be per-
formed, as originally
scheduled on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday even-
ings during the fall semes-
ter of the 1978-1979 school
year.
Bethlehem Rites
Attract 30,000
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Some 30,000 people partici-
pated in Christmas fes-
tivities in Bethlehem.
A select audience of some
1,000 people attended the
midnight mass at the St.
Catherine Church last week
while outside in Manger
Square a giant television
screen provided several
thousand other pilgrims
with a view of the church
service. Israel TV broadcast
the ceremony live to about
* 30 countries.
Bethlehem Mayor Elias
Freij rejected pressure by
Arab' extremists to cancel
the traditional Christmas
eve reception and limit the
festivities to protest against
Israeli measures on the
West Bank.
Local residents said sec-
urity measures were unpre-
cedented. Israeli troops pat-
rolled the town's back
streets and watched crowds
from rooftops overlooking
the square. Persons enter-
ing the square were
searched and police sealed
off the entire area.

TRENTON, N.J. (JTA) —
The seven-member New
Jersey State Supreme Court
ruled unanimously last
week that a ban on extra-
curricular activities by a
public school board on
Jewish and Christian Sab-
baths, to accommodate the
religious needs of students,
was not _an unconstitutional
accommodation of religion.
The court affirmed,-with-
out opinion, an earlier rul-
ing of a three judge panel of
the State Appellate Divi-
sion which had upheld as
constitutional such a ban by
a Teaneck high school. The
Teaneck Board of Education
adopted on March 9, 1977, a
policy which banned
scheduling of extra-
curricular student ac-
tivities on Friday nights,
Saturdays or Sunday morn-
ings.
