Smith recalls a bitter
statement he made some
time ago, to the effect that
"God Almighty does not
hear the prayer of a Jew."
Many Jews, and some
conscionable Christians, I
imagine, took very deep of-
fense at this statement. I be-
lieve, however, that if it is

Israel passed out of exis-
tence with the destruc-
tion of the Temple of
Jerusalem, in the year 70
CE. In the Baptist theol-
ogy, the divinity of Christ
is one of the cornerstones
of the faith. Smith's "God
Almighty" is none other
than the son of Mary,
Jesus Christ! Well, for a
certainty, Jesus does not
hear the prayer of a Jew.
Neither does Zeus,
Buddha or the Ramak-
rishna.

Only the God of Israel
hears the prayer of the Jew.
Indeed, He alone hears the
prayers of all men, of all
races and nations, and of all
who turn to Him in suppli-
cation, as it says in the
liturgy, "He hears the
prayers of every mouth,
with mercy." I think that
includes Baptists!

viewed in light of its source,
it will not be deemed offen-
sive, and most Jews would
agree to the veracity of this
remark.
When Bailey E. Smith
says "God Almighty," he is
referring to Jesus Christ (cf.
John A. Hardon, "Christ-
ianity in the Twentieth
Century," Doubleday).
Granted! No Jew would dis-
agree. In fact that state-
ment was made by Elijah on
Mount Carmel, when he cal-
led to the priests of Baal and
the Ashtaroth, "Cry aloud:
for he is a god . . . perad-
venture he sleepeth and
must be awaked . . . but
there was neither a voice
nor any answer" (I Kings
18:27, 29).
David corroborates the
same feeling in the Psalms
(Psalm 115:6), "They have
ears, but they hear not."
As far as Bailey Smith
is concerned, the God of

service to ZOA and the state
of Israel."
Leikin was graduated
from a Hebrew "Tarbut"
Gymnasium in Mariam-
pole, Lithuania, and was
one of the founders and
leaders of the Betar youth
movement inspired by Ze'ev
Jabotinsky. Upon arrival in
the U.S. in 1933, he served
on the governing bodies of
both the Zionist-Revisionist
movement and Betar.
In World War II, he
served with U.S. military

East and Europe.
Leikin's articles and es-
says on U.S.-Israel rela-
tions, Zionist ideology
and general problems of
Jewish concern have ap-
peared in newspapers
and magazines in this
country, Europe and Is-

ideology.
