Yugoslavia OKs
Israeli Adviser

JERUSALEM — An Is-
raeli scientist, Prof. Aviezer
Stevan Kertes of the Insti-
tute of Chemistry of the
Hebrew University of
Jerusalem, recently re-
turned from two months in
Yugoslavia where he served
as an adviser on behalf of
the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA).
Prof. Kertes was ap-
pointed by IAEA as its con-
sultant on the recovery of
uranium from phosphate
rocks and was sent by the
Agency to the Institute for
Technology of Nuclear and
Otther Mineral Raw Mate-
rials in Belgrade.
Yugoslavia was the only
European country which
joined Arab states in spon-
soring the IAEA decision to
take economic and political
steps against Israel follow-
ing thebombing of the Iraqi
nuclear installation in
Baghdad. In spite of this,
the Israeli expert was re-
ceived without any objec-
tion in Yugoslavia.

This is the first time
that an Israeli was ap-
pointed to such a position
in a country which se-
vered ties with Israel in
the wake of the Six-Day
War. Prof. Kertes is also
the first Israeli to be ap-
pointed to such a position
in a Communist-bloc
country.

Born in Hungary, Prof.
Kertes obtained his PhD in
Belgrade in 1952. He has
been on the Hebrew Uni-
versity faculty since the
early 1950s.
