IMI • am im as • as
monly translated as fellow-
ship — has come to mean a
small group of Jews who
meet regularly for study,
worship or celebration.
Though the concept of
havurot dates back over
2,000 years, the growth of
modern-day havurot began
in the late 1960s and early
1970s, and has grown to in-
clude a diverse range of
groups — some traditional
and others experimental;
some independent, others
part of synagogues — all
comprised of individuals
sharing a wish to develop
serious, self-directed
Jewish lives.
Because of the tremend-
ous growth in numbers and
activities of havurot, the
National Havura Coor-
dinating Committee was
created to serve as the na-
tional network and resource
center, implementing prog-
rams and publications to
support activities of
havurot.
