in their 'Worst Food in
Oregon' restaurant in this
eastern Oregon wayside"
. . . (Hines, Ore.).
" It's the worst food you
ever ate,' boasts the 53-
year-old Mrs. Hannaford.
`Service is worse,' adds her
husband, 56.
"That's the name of the
place — The Worst Food in
Oregon. The signs bring
abashed motorists in for a
cheap meal — and back for
more.
" 'They can't pass the
place up,' Mr. Hannaford
told an Associated Press
reporter recently. He
does the cooking while
his wife waits on the five
tables and eight counter
stools.
"The menu urges diners
to 'Come in and sit with the
flies,' although none of the
critters was flitting about
the spotless premises when
the reporter visited.
"Previous owners hadn't
had much success with the
premises. And business was
slow for the first few days 11
years ago when the Han-
nafords bought it. That
lasted until the sign went
up.
" 'I don't know how we
came up with it,' he says. 'I
was thinking of calling it
The Best, like a lot of res-
taurants do. I said the hell
with that, I'll go with the
opposite.'

"Actually the food isn't
the worst. The portions
are generous and the
prices are low.

"And the word has gotten
out. But when they ask
what the chef recommends,
Mr. Hannaford advises
them to go somewhere else.
"They keep irregular
hours. 'We tell people, when
the lights are on, we're
open. Some days we just like
to sleep in.'
"The couple also cashes in
on another advantage — lo-
cation. The cafe is strategi-
cally situated as the last
place for westbound
motorists to eat before strik-
ing out over 63 miles of U.S.
20 in sagebrush-covered
eastern Oregon high des-
ert.

"The way things are go-
ing, the Hannafords
could stand a little ex-
pansion. At busy times,
eager diners cool their
heels for over an hour on
the porch before a table
becomes free.
" 'It's a little hole in the

wall, but I could double the
size of the building,' says
Mr. Hannaford. But his wife
rebuts, 'that's all we need,
more customers. There'll be
none of that.' "
MARY CONWAY and
Harry Satchwell, authors of
"Meet, Eat & Enjoy" write
. . "This year, we have
found it even more difficult
to present a large number of
quality restaurants. From
our viewpoint, quantity has
dimished, quality has in-
creased, and that's due to
the new, very young chefs
who have come to town and
the raised sights of many
oldtimers.

Captives should not be
ransomed at exorbitant
costs — for the safety of
society: otherwise, our

enemies will exert every ef-
fort to capture victims. But
a man may ransom himself
at any price.
