Interviewed by Michiko
Kakutami (New York
Times Book Review, Sun-
day, Dec. 13), Nobel Prize
Winner Saul Bellow made
this comment:
"I think of myself as an
American of Jewish heri-
tage. When most people call
someone a 'Jewish writer,'
it's a way of setting you
aside. They don't talk about
the powers of the 'Jewish
writers' who wrote the Old
Testament, they say to
write novels you need to
know something about
manners, ' which is some-
thing you have to be raised
in the South to know.
"I felt many writers (dur-

Book on Welsh
Nationalism

LOS ANGELES — A
book titled "Identity and
Assimilation: The Welsh-
English Dichotomy," by Dr.
Neil C. Sandberg, director
of the American Jewish
Committee's Western
Region, has just been pub-
lished by University Press
of America.
Dr. Sandberg is the direc-
tor of the Loyola
Marymount University
Martin Gang Institute for
Intergroup Relations Train-
ing.
"Identity and Assimila-
tion: The Welsh-English
Dichotomy" is about the
quiet revolution taking
place in Wales. According to
Dr. Sandberg, a Welsh
nationalist movement has
emerged that strives for cul-
tural, economic and politi-
cal separatism.

Cranston Hits
Reagan Policy
in Middle East

Make Chanukah something special!

ATLANTA — Sen. Alan
Cranston (D-Calif.) has
warned the Reagan ad-
ministration that it is build-
ing its Middle East policy on
"sand" by supporting
"shaky sheikdoms" like
Saudi Arabia.
The Senator told an
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith human relations
banquet here that the U.S.
and Western Europe are
unwise in "relying militar-
ily and economically, on so-
called friendly, moderate
Arab nations that are un-
stable, unreliable and un-
democratic."

Floating Path

SAFED — A "floating
path" has recently been
augurated in the Hula Na-
ture Reserve between
Kiryat Shmona and Safed.
The path is actually an ele-
vated bridge which cuts
across the reserve, connect-
ing a bird sanctuary with
what remains of the lake.
The path is 700 yards in
length and -cost IS 1.3 mil-
lion ($120,000) to construct.
The Jewish National Fund's
afforestation division was
instrumental in the plan-
ning and execution of the
bridge which is expected to
be a great help for
birdwatchers.
