at Northwestern . . . with
that pretty smile and
personality also mak-
ing her a top model around
town.
CHARLIE PAPPAS,
owner with brother Frank
at Rialto Cafe on Woodward
and Nine Mile, was a bus-
boy, years back at the
Alamo on Livernois . . .
owned by Max Spiegelman
and Stu Segal . . . Today
Rialto has been rated by
various publications among
the top 10 restaurants in the
metropolitan area for com-
plete meals under $5.
KITTY WAGNER and
Roslyn Hayes want to know
where they can find a good
Hungarian restaurant.
ROOM AT John Laf-
frey's Vineyard's Annex
that at one time was a hold-
ing area for folks, is now a
very functional and much-
wanted part of John's popu-
lar room. . . The heavy
brick wall separating it
from Mel Ball & Colours has
been broken through .. .
and a mirrored bar ex-
tended for folks to see and
hear Mel with his fine
group.
It has nine little tables,
with chairs and padded
leather seating around the
fully mirrored wall . . . giv-
ing a very New Yorkish look
. . . People discovering the
new addition love it
MAGIC is at Dewey's in
the Michigan Inn through
Jan. 16 . . . The four-piece
group plus female vocalist
appears Monday through
Saturday 9 to 1 for dancing
to top 40 tunes.
HELEN ZANBECK
can't stay away from being a
waitress . . . The former
Dubbs gal . . . at the same
site over 10 years . . . was
given a retirement party ..
but couldn't resist the call of '
the tables when asked to re-
turn to duty mornings by
Green-10 'Restaurant on 10
Mile and Greenfield . . .
alongside gals like pleas-
ant, smiling Terry Harris
. . . Izzy Cohen and so many
customers are glad Helen is
back.
STEPHAN BECHAR-
AS at Gallery Restaurant
on W. 10 Mile east of Ever-
green uses so many Jewish
expressions that many folks
ask if he is really Greek .. .
Recently while saying "Zie
Gezundt" to a customer, one
gent said he was wasting his
breath . . . they don't under-
stand . . . "That's their
problem," remarked
Stephan.
POPULAR
A
DOWNTOWN bar in the
Hotel Pontchartrain has
been remodeled and dedi-
cated to "strong drink,
strong cigars and strong
men," according to its prop-
rietor, Chuck Muer . .
Strong women will be ad-
itted, too, but the dress
m
code is "coat and tie" for
"everyone" . . . Ties will be
loaned, free of charge, to
those without them.
The newly-remodeled
bar in Hotel Pontchart-
rain recently reopened
with a special dedication

ceremony by members of
Humidor No. 5, cigar
Smokers of America.
Dick Uday, head corona,
presided.
Ernest and Larry
DuMouchelle of the
DuMouchelle Galleries in
downtown Detroit held an
auction of cigar
memorabilia and antiques
in the bar, to benefit Father
Quinn's Sacred Heart Re-
habilitation Center.
The Salamandre features
an electronic stock ex-
change board over the bar,
ready access to the Wall
Street Journal, the New
York Times and Chicago
Tribune on wall racks.
A special cigar menu,
maybe the first in the na-
tion, guides cigar connis-
seurs through the 14 choice
varieties in the humidor.
Guests included Mil-
lard Newman, presidnet
of M&N Cigar Co. of
Tampa, Fla., maker of
Cuesta-Rey cigars and
one of the country's
largest cigar companies.
Elaine Newman Rogan,
whose father Julius Caesar
Newman founded M & N.
Cigar Co. in 1895, was
among the guests.
