WHEN PEOPLE CAN
say a restaurant has gotten
better, that's quite a state-
ment . . . but when it can be
said the place has also at-
tained an even higher de-
gree of versatility in all ph-
ases . . . from dining to fun
to entertainment, this is an
epitome.
Such is the case with
Maximilian's on Woodward
just south of 14 Mile in
Royal Oak . . . It was son
Scott's final evening here
before packing off for his
new lifestyle as a junior at
University of Texas in Au-
stin . . . His wish was for
some Mexican food and fun
. . . Maximilian's provided
our party with both . . . as it
proved to be a wise choice.
Our waitress, Gayle Kel-
ler, daughter of Harold and
Reva Keller, and
grandmother Bertha Wil-
son's pride, smilingly,
courteously and efficiently
brought us a bevy of good
things to eat and drink.
The very fine Maximi-
lian's cheese crisp that
looks like a little pizza .. .
previously only topped
with Mexican sausage
and cheese, but now, if
desired, also with green
peppers and mushrooms,
was superb . . . There was
nary a crumb left ...
Same with the filled
potato skins.

own concoctions with the
cheese crisp . . . Maximi-
lian's will supply whatever
tingles the taste buds.
The salads are very in-
novatively served . . . in
crisp, edible tortilla shells
.. . If you get the house pre-
pared ranch dressing, ask
for some guacamole on the
side and put the mixture to-
gether . . . The taste is all its
very own.
Maximilian's does won-
derful things with vegeta-
bles . . . and they're all so
delicious.
On the entree side, Gayle
served our party . . .
Chimichanga (flour tortil-
las filled with meat, refried
beans, with cheese and to-
mato, topped with
guacamole on a bed of let-
tuce) . . . the house specialty
of a beautiful looking and
tender one pound sirloin .. .
chicken sautee (breast of
chicken sauteed with green
peppers, mushrooms and
onions served on a bed of
Spanish rice) . . . and Steak
Picado (tenderloin strips
sauteed in green peppers,
mushrooms, tomatoes and
onions, served on a bed of
Spanish rice).
Some
delicious
Dosequis Mexican beer
• • • and then came a
couple of those luscious
Maximilian's desserts .
Mud Pie (chocolate ice
cream topped with hot
fudge on an Oreo cookie
crust) ... Sand Pie
(butter pecan ice cream
topped with caramel on a
graham cracker crust).
Maximilian's owners
Harry Eisenberg and Mark
Papazian opened their suc-
cessful operation in April
. . . seating 140 upstairs . .
tables and very intimate
high-backed booths behind
lattice work that overlooks
the main dining room with
its draped ceilings and cozy
atmosphere.
Harry and Mark have a
sister act in barmaids Marci
and Deni Rosenberg .. .
which was as far as they
originally intended to go .. .
That is, until getting to-
gether with Mark Ridley .. .
Now there are plenty of acts
as the popular Comedy Cas-
tle has merged forces with
Maximilian's to present its
showcase for comics in the
180-seater lower level
which brings guffaws with
much regularity these days.
Comedy Castle is very
professional . with its
master of ceremonies and
comedy acts prior to the
main attraction . . . While
smiling, attentive waitress
Colleen "Coco" Periman
brought our drinks, the
entertainment was con-
tinuous evening of belly
rolls.
Main attraction was Mike
Binder, who'll return for
New Year's Eve at Maximi-
lian's . . . former Detroiter,
now living in Los Angeles
. . . appearing in television
and movies plus prime com-
edy spots.
Shows are 9 p.m. and 11
