Spe- cial services were held at the Shaarei Shalom Sephardic Synagogue in the city of Salisbury. Unfortu- nately, the state of Zim- babwe has not yet recog- nized the state of Israel which was born 32 years be- fore Zimbabwe attained its independence. Latest figures show 300 Sephardim and 400 Ashkenazim citizens of Zimbabwe. * Max Weinreich (1894- 1969) is the author of the monumental "History of the Yiddish Language," pub- lished by the University of Chicago Press. In 833 pages this eminent scholar con- centrates heavily on the technical linguistics, but at the same time presents a new specter of major trends in Jewish history during the last thousand years. The grandeur of Yid- dish is evident in the fol- lowing proverbs: "If the rich could hire others to die for them, the poor would make a nice liv- ing." "The Lord, when he wants to punish an ig- noramus, inspires him to mouth some piece of learning." "If things don't get better, depend on it, they will get worse." "Ever since dying came into fashion, life hasn't been safe." "If God were living on earth, people would break His windows" and "God will provide — if only God would provide until he provides." * * * In the USSR, Jews can serve as members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Two who do are Veniamin Em- manuelovitch Dymshitz, who is also a deputy Soviet prime minister, and Lev Mordkovitch Volodarsky, who is Minister of the Cen- tral Statistical Directorate. Soviet Jews in high posi- tions include Lev Borisovitch Shapiro, a member of the _Central Committee; Alexander Borisovitch Chakovsky, editor; Colonel-General David Abramovitch Dragunsky, member of the Central Auditing Commit- tee; Prof. Georgy Alexan- drovitch Arbatov, adviser on American affairs; and Georgy Emmanuelovitch Tsukanov, presidential assistant. * * * Montreal, Quebec, has just opened a "Palesti- nian information office" at the headquarters of the Centrale de L'En- siegnement du Quebec, (-the French teachers union) on St. Lawrence Boulevard. The office's director is Edmond Om- ran, a Canadian citizen who allegedly migrated from "Palestine." * * By HASKELL COHEN Inc.) A fact that Israeli basket- ball officials have been try- ing to cover up for some time - has come into the open and some of these officials are quite alarmed. The Associated Press, this month, filed a story out of Tel Aviv which detailed the means and methods em- ployed by Israel basketball teams in the various na- tional leagues in the Holy Land to cover up the fact that many of the players are not Jewish and described the methods in which they got to Israel. The writer for the Associ- ated Press went into detail, spelling out every little schtick employed and de- vised by Israeli basketball people in getting these Gen- ) tile players to perform for them. A representative from Tel Aviv Hapoel was quoted in the story as to how their strongest com- petitor, the perennial Is- raeli champion Maccabi Tel Aviv, went out of its way to sign up Jack Zimmerman and then tried to palm him off as being Jewish. Zimmer- man is a devout Catholic, who graduated from Dayton University. His uncle is a priest at the Israel Exporting Cotton Flour HAIFA (JNI) — The Miluot Co. has completed contracts to sell low-fat, protein-rich cotton flour to Mexico and Europe. The flour is normally mixed with wheat flour in a 1:4 ratio. Miluot, owned by several Galilee settlements, will export 15,000 tons of cotton flour to Europe this year. The company also produces cottonseed oil, chocolate additives and photographic emulsifiers from the cotton plant. Jamaican life: Jews have been members of the Privy Council, the Legislative Council, mayors of Kings- ton and St. Andrews, resi- dent magistrates, justices of the peace, as well as numerous other gov- ernmental positions. Sir Neville Ashenheim served as Jamaican Am- bassador to the United States. In Kingston, at the corner of Duke Street and Charles Street, is a beautiful synagogue accommodating 600 worshippers. Sand is strewn over the floor like Sephardic synagogues in Amsterdam, Curacao, Panama and the U.S. Vir- gin Islands. Indeed, Jews have been prominent in all facets of Catholic school and serves as the basketball team's captain. According to the AP dis- patch, Israeli basketball teams have arranged for Is- raeli women, in return for financial renumeration, to marry non-Jewish ballplayers so that they could qualify to play. The rule concerning foreign players states that if a per- former is married to a Jewish woman he is eligible to play on a national league team. The wire service dispatch , goes on to state that the Knesset is investigating the situation and is trying to come up with some recom- mendations concerning in- coming basketball players. Downward Trend TEL AVIV (ZINS) — He- brew University Prof. Robert Bachi says that Jewish populations throughout the Diaspora are in a state of decline. He said that only in Israel do births exceed deaths. He said the Diaspora population did not decline between 1946 and 1972 be- cause of a post-Holocaust "baby boom," but since that time there was been a downward trend.
