THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Rabbi Harry Goldwater Dies Rabbi Harry Emanuel Goldwater, spiritual leader of Cong. Beth Tephilath Moses of Mt. Clemens, died Dec. 12 at age 61. Born in England, Rabbi Goldwater lived-in the U.S. for the past 30 years, and in Michigan for the past eight years. He became a rabbi at age 21 and at that time was the youngest rabbi in the British commonwealth. He was educated at Leeds Uni- versity, Oxford University ews College of London he was ordained. Rabbi Goldwater was elected to the secretariate of the British Rabbinical Association at age 21. He was a chap- lain in the British army with the rank of captain and was cited for "dis- tinction to duty." Rabbi GOldwater held pulpits in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Pennsylvania prior to corn- ing to Michigan in 1972. His first Michigan pulpit was at Temple Bnai Israel of Saginaw. While in Chicago, Rabbi Goldwater was active in the Anti - Defamation League of Bnai Brith. He is survived by his wife, Rita; two sons, Stuart and Melvin, both of North Hol- lywood, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Adrian) Raskin of Fontana, Calif.; step- children, Steven Blaske, Marc Blaske, Susan Blaske and Marsha Blaske; a brother, Dr. Leo of London, England; three sisters, Mrs. Betty Tattenhall of England, Mrs. Rae Griep of Holland and Mrs. Essie Myers of Leeds, England; and five grandchildren. Born in Vilna, he studied before World War II in Bel- gium and, after the out- break of war, made his way to England after an epic journey through France to Spain where he spent 14 months in an internment camp. After a struggle with the British authorities, he suc- ceeded in joining the Royal Air Force as an air gunner. During a bombing mission he had to parachute into Belgium and returned to Britain to convalesce.
