The situation was made public in a letter to the cam- pus newspaper, the South End, which accused Arab students of making threats against Jews. Rabbi Louis Finkelman, director of the WSU'Hillel Foundation, told The Jewish News that the focus of the dispute is anti-Israel and anti-Jewish displays being placed in cases at the WSU Student Center Build- ing by three Arab student organizations. The JeWish students have countered with their own displays on Zionism and Israel. Rabbi Finkelman said the WSU Student - Faculty Council has approved a re- solution condemning ethnic hatred, and narrowly de- feated two efforts to change the resolution. He said the dis- plays have contained "ex- cessive graphics" that have been repeated several times. Dr. Marcus said to his knowledge there has been no violence when the two groups have ar- gued in front of the dis- plays, but there have been "near-fisticuffs" several times. Dr. Marcus said the uni- versity is also going to examine its policies on use of the showcases. "We don't want to limit free speech, but we want to have some kind of quality control," he said. "We don't want one element throwing bricks at another element." Rabbi Finkelman said a number of steps have been taken to cool the tension and that the Anti - Defama- tion League of Bnai Brith has been consulted on the problem.
