JERUSALEM— Hebrew
University of Jerusalem
has bestowed the title of
Honorary Fellow on Dr.
Morton Mayer Berman, 82,
an American Reform rabbi
who immigrated to Israel
Born in Baltimore and

stitute of Religion in 1926,
Rabbi Berman served Re-
form temples in New York

25 years.
He was a founding

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
first application of solar
power for commercial pur-
poses began in Israel last
week.
A specially built com-
puter activated 500-square
meters of solar energy col-
lectors to produce steam
running an electric
generator at the Tapud food
factory in Shaar Hanegev.
The product: French fried
potatoes.
The solar power plant,
known as the Luz system or
LS-I, was designed by Ar-
nold Goldman, an engineer
who recently immigrated
from the U.S. American ex-
perts described it as the
most efficient solar
generator in the world. The
Tapud factory is the first to
use it on a commercial basis.
The system is composed of
a battery of long parabolic
mirrors in the form of
troughs which reflect sun-
light on an oil-filled pipe in
the center of the trough. The
liquid in the pipe absorbs
the sun's heat and trans-
forms it into steam energy
at temperatures of up to 250
degrees C. The computer
keeps the troughs pointed
directly at the sun for
maximum efficiency.

TEL AVIV (JNI) — The
Ministry of Labor and So-
cial Affairs last week re-
vealed its plan to increase
the proportion of women in
the Israeli labor force from
36 to 45 percent by 1990.
According to ministry
sources, 78 percent of all
women with over 14 years of
schooling are employed,
matching the male rate in
this education bracket.
Unemployment among
women declined somewhat
this year to 6.4 percent. The
male jobless rate stands at
4.6 percent.
