MARTIN LITVIN

The governor of Kansas
proclaimed Sept. 12, 1981,
as "August M. Bondi Day"
in honor of Bondi's con-
tributions and those of his
family.
- Bondi was a young

Viennese Jew who par-
ticipated in the failed Au-
strian Revolution of 1848.
He fled to America with
his family and settled in
St. Louis. A political ac-
tivist, Bondi's restless-
ness led him to the Kan-
sas Territory by 1855.
Bondi and two other
young St. Louis Jewish
businessmen went to the
area near - Osawatomie,
Kan., not far from today's
village of Lane. They
cleared acreage and built
cabins for themselves and
their families. They also
built a log store and stocked
it with - merchandise
brought in covered wagons
from St. Louis.
In the same area, a simi-
lar store was operated by
some pro-slavery men. They
undertook a smear cam-
paign against the St. Louis
men and attempted to drive
them away. John Brown, an
abolitionist who was vio-
lently opposed to slavery,
lived nearby. His sons of-
fered protection to the three
men from St. Louis, and
Bondi and his two friends
were soon riding with John
Brown.

By the time John Brown
had gone east to attack the
Federal Arsenal at Harper's
Ferry, Bondi and his two
friends had quit Brown's
group. Bondi, who disag-
reed with Brown on certain
political matters, stayed in
Kansas, farmed, got mar-
ried, started a family, and
when the Civil War began,
joined the 5th Kansas
Cavalry. Bondi served for
31/2 years and was a first
sergeant.
Following the war,
Bondi and his family lo-
cated at Salina, Kan. At
various times, Bondi
farmed, ran clothing
stores, was a probate
judge, a police judge, a
postmaster, and at age 63,
after passing the Kansas
Bar, a practicing attor-
ney.
In 1903-1905, he was a di-
rector of the Kansas State
Historical Society and do-
nated to that organization
his personal group of John
Brown artifacts which in-
cludes John Brown's sword
and rifle. He died in 1907.
Author Martin Litvin is a
native of Galesburg who has
lived most of his life in New
York. He has written sev-
eral historical and fictional
works about his native area

PARIS (JTA) — Guy de
Rothschild and his son,
David, were re-elected by an
overwhelming majority to
the executive committee of
France's major Jewish
organization, the United
Jewish Welfare Fund
(FSJU).
Both Rothschilds were
re-elected in spite of reports
that several members of the
FSJU National Council, the
organization's permanent
general assembly, would
vote against them bwause
of the banking family's
overly close ties with the
former Administration of
President Valery Giscard
d'Estaing.
Several Jewish splinter
movements have bitterly
attacked them, claiming
they had not opposed vigor-
ously enough Giscard's
Middle East policy and of
having been lukewarm in
their support of Israel.
Both Guy and David de
Rothschild have adamantly
denied these claims and
