THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 18, 1981 17 Hollings Explains Metzenbaum Incident; Denies Charge of Bias U.S. Senator Ernest Hol- lings (D-S.C.) vehemently denies harboring prej- udices. He especially re- futes the accusation that he has ever entertained anti- Semitic ideas. Graham had written criticizing him for his reference to Metzen- baum during the debate as the "Senator from Bnai Brith." Senator Hollings' letter to Graham follows: "Obviously one would not refer to another person out of the clear as the 'Jewish Voice.' This would be offen- sive and unforgivable. You must understand that the parties were friends and the circum- stances were otherwise than you read. We were in a heated debate over school prayer which, in- cidentally, is the best rea- son that politics should not get mixed in with religion. One side was ac- cusing the other of hypocrisy in that the Se- nate itself begins each daily session with a vol- untary prayer, yet some Senators who counte- nance this will not countenance a voluntary prayer in the public school. "The other side was ac- cusing those supporting the amendment of doing so in violation of their oath to , support the Constitution. "The Senator from North Carolina was being cross- examined on the Catholic `Hail Mary' Prayer, and I was trying to introduce some levity to cool the at- mosphere. The Senator from North Carolina was re- ferred to as the Baptist Voice, the Senator from Missouri (himself a minis- ter) was referred to as the Episcopal Voice, and the Senator from Maine, for- merly a federal judge, was referred to as Judge Mitch- ell. "No one took offense, and this was the atmosphere prevailing when I turned to my friend Howard Metzen- baum and stated, "The questioning will now be done by the Senator from Bnai Brith.' He took excep- tion to being referred to as the Jewish Voice, and I im- mediately apologized. "I have known Howard Metzenbaum for a long time. I have been a spon- sor of his fund-raising re- ceptions for re-election. The last thing I would do would be to hurt his feel- ings. There was no malice or intent to hurt in my reference to him, and I was mistaken when I thought he would take it in the spirit I had in mind. "I have participated in ceremonies at Bnai Brith and I have the highest re- gard for the Jewish faith. Other than sincerely re- gretting my mistake, I can only refer you to the Jewish community of my hometown of Charleston which knows me better than these inflammatory news articles."
