the Foundation for Mid-
dle East Peace, and John
Greene Jr., president of
the Seven Springs
Center.
According to their report
"Hopes for a negotiated
peace are fading just at a
moment when acceptance of
Palestinian national iden-
tity in the Arab world and
beyond and growing Arab
willingness to accept the Is-
raeli state have created the
best possibility of an Arab-
Palestinian-Israei negotia-
tion since Israel was estab-
lished."
The report said further
that there was "wide-spread
conviction in the Middle
East that only the United
States can effectively help
to achieve peace, but there
is deep doubt that the Un-
ited States is prepared to
play a role as a just
mediator and to work ac-
tively for a negotiated
peace."
It called on the U.S. "to
wed military and diploma-
tic strength in a coherent
strategy" that goes beyond
the Camp David process be-
tween Israel and Egypt and
to mount "a parallel cam-
paign" that would involve
other Mideastern states
such as Saudi Arabia, Jor-
dan and Syria in peace talks
with Israel.

Inflation Jump

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
The consumer price index in
Israel rose nine percent in
October, bringing inflation
for the previous 12 months
to 110 percent.
At the same time, the
Central Bureau of Statistics
reported that the standard
of living index had in-
creased by 12 percent.

include such hearty fare

as slumgullion and
gumbo, along with exo-
tics like East Indian mul-
ligatawney. A 22-page
section on Oriental soups
contains recipes from
China, Japan and In-
donesia, plus complete
instructions for prepar-
ing the Oriental firepot.
There are 22 cold soups
(cucumber vichysoisse,
creamy pumpkin) and 14
fruit soups (cantaloupe,
strawberry wine and
rhubarb).
"Soup" emphasizes good
nutrition, natural foods,
ease in preparation and re-
duced calories. Recipes from
the original edition have
been reworked to aid in ease
of preparation, to eliminate
artificial seasonings, and to
suggest substitutions for
rich ingredients such as
cream.
Throughout the book are
hints for recycling leftovers
such as salads and stews
into nutritious and econom-
ical soups. Finally, Castle
includes accoutrements and
accompaniments for soups,
and mini-recipes for embel-
lishing canned soups.
Castle also is the author
or co-author of six cook-
books, including "Real
Bread" and "The Art of
Cooking for Two."

Many an honest man
practices on himself an
amount of deceit, sufficient,
if practiced on another, and
in a little different way, to
send him to the state prison.
