Marilyn Kaczander-Cohen 649-2970 399-8701 Ohio Program Aiding Aliya Editor, The Jewish News: In a moment of amazing candor, Moshe Arens, who has been named Israel's next Ambassador to the Un- ited States, told delegates at the recent General Assem- bly of the Council of Jewish Federations that Israel must receive more settlers from the American Jewish community. He also urged all Jews in the United States to search for ways to establish direct and per- sonal ties with Israel. In reply to Arens, Volun- teers for Americans in Is- rael offer our "landsman" concept. This means Jews in America supporting in var- ious ways fellow-Americans in Israel or those preparing to go there. Our "landsman" program begin five years ago in Cleveland, Ohio, with a group of volunteers who be- lieve that American immig- ration to Israel could be much more successful if Jews in the United States identified with the settlers and assisted them. First we located our own Cleveland "landsmen" in Israel and put together var- ious support services for them. Then we organized conversational Hebrew classes for ourselves, subscribed to the Jerusalem Post and began listening to "the voice of Israel" on shortwave radio. We expanded to other cities when we organized an Israel travel program aimed at reducing the cost of visit- ing Israel. In partnership with other Americans in Israel, we produced a "Life in Israel" education program de- signed to cut the culture shock for future American immigrants.Next, we plan to establish an American neighborhood in Jerusalem that will serve as the focal point of our "landsman" program: Jews in the Un- ited States participating by investing in an apartment and renting it to an Ameri- can settler; helping create businesses in Israel that will employ Americans; de- veloping American markets for products produced by our own settlers in Israel; buy- ing a second home or time- sharing in a neighborhood apartment and visiting each year. Retirees could be trained to use their ex- pertise providing new ar- rivals with important in- formation on the prob- lems of everyday living in the Jewish state, organiz- ing retraining courses, finding jobs or business opportunities and assist. ing with the bureauc- racy. Just giving settlers the warmth, understanding and feeling they are wanted by people who sincerely care about their well-being would stem the ever- increasing number of American dropouts. Our "landsman" concept is a unique plan that offers all kinds of exciting pos- sibilities for providing the settlers Israel must have and the direct involvement each of us needs.
