JWF Statement Backs Diversity

agile
(Dollen

"Diversity" in mobilizing
participation in the ac-
tivities and services re-
ndered by the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation was em-
phasized this week in a
statement by the Federa-
tion president, Judge Avern
Cohn.
The explanatory corn-

merit was made in response
to a question raised with re-
gard to a Federation state-
ment, signed by Judge
Cohn's predecessor as Fed-
eration president, George
M. Zeltzer, urging support
of a synagogue enrollment
appeal.
Judge Cohn stated, "Fed-

eration has long recognized
the diversity of Jewish
commitment which exists
within its constituency. It
was not the intention in any
way to denote any exclusiv-
ity in the encouragement of
synagogue membership."
Judge Cohn's response
was addressed to Mark
Cousens, who heads the
newly-formed Michigan
Coalition of Secular and
Humanistic Jews. The
group includes the Bir-
mingham Temple, the
Jewish Parents Institute,
Sholom Aleichem Insti-
tute and Workmen's Cir-
cle.
The critical approach to
the synagogue enrollment
campaign endorsement by
the Federation was in refer-
ence to the full-page appeal
in The Jewish News, Aug.
21. That appeal invited the
community to "Discover the
joys of joining a synagogue
or temple." The advertise-
ment was sponsored by the
Synagogue Council of Grea-
ter Detroit and advertised
open houses that were being
sponsored by Synagogue
Council's member congre-
gations.
Within the ad, the follow-
ing statement appeared
over Zeltzer's name:
The Synagogue . . . the
repository of Jewish values
is committed to the continu-
ing survival and viability of
the Jewish community. The
concept of community —
kehilla — is an historic
Jewish tenet. The Federa-
tion and the Synagogue
serve the same community,
the same people, and there-
fore, we must seek to rein-
force each other in this en-
deavor to strengthen both
our Federation and our
Synagogues.
"The officers and
board of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation support
and encourage Syna-
gogue affiliation as a con-
firmation of commitment
to a full Jewish life."
Writing on behalf of the
new coalition, Cousens
wrote, "(Our) membership
feels a deep and abiding
commitment to their Jewish
heritage. But our Jewish
identity is not necessarily
associated with or tied to
membership in a
synagogue.
"As secular and humanis-
tic Jews, we identify as Jews
with no less vigor than any
other member of our com-
munity. We, too, are com-
mitted to the continuing
survival and viability of the
Jewish community.
"We regret the notion
that only a synagogue can
adequately serve as a re-
pository for Jewish values.
Our organizations are
committed to exactly that
objective, and we are not
prepared to admit a lack of
success . . ."

The Gift
That Will Touch
Her Heart

Gift giving is something
very special, personal,
something that touches the
heart. So is a European
facial from Kitty Wagners'.
They both tell her how
special she is. A perfect
gift, one that says "I really
care," a gift that lets her
pamper herself in a very
personal way.

So this year give her the gift
that's as loving and personal
as she is. A gift that shows
her how special she really is.
