Many Meanings of 7-lanuka'

Receives Award

NEW YORK — Dr. Aaron
B. Lerner, chairman of the
departmerit of dermatology
at the Yale University
School of Medicine, has
been given the 1981 Lita
Annenberg Hazen AWard.
Dr. Lerner, who was cited
for important contributions
to immunology, endocrinol-
ogy and neuro-biolOgy, will
receive $50,000. An addi-
tional $50,000 will support
the work of young physi-
c -- "fans chosen by Dr. Lerner
work with him in biomed-
ical research.

A number of meanings for
the word Hanuka is offered
in the rabbinic literature.
One is that the word means
"they rested" (Chanu on the
25th (Chof Hey) of Kislev.
According to one source,
this means that the Mac-
cabees finished the war
with the Graeco - Syrians on
the 25th of Kislev (Pri
Chadash). Another source
says this means that they
rested from work on this
date. This may be the basis
for having women desist
from housework when the
