Growth Projected

Kosher Label Enforcement
Making Gains in New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (JTA) —
During the past four years,
there has been a steady im-
provement in compliance
with kosher labeling laws
as well as in some areas of
kosher food service by com-
mercial establishments, ac-
cording to the Kosher Law
Enforcement division of the
New York State Depart-
ment of Agriculture and
Markets.
Rabbi Schulem Rubin,
chief supervisor of the divi-
sion, said the findings of di-
vision inspectors indicated
there was a "ray of hope" in
what some observers con-

sider a chaotic kashrut
situation in the United
States.
He said it was obvious
from recently widely pub-
licized developments that
severe and flagrant fraud
existed among purveyors of
kosher meat, particularly
processors and wholesalers.
In that area, he said,
the situation is depres-
sing if judged mainly by a
few perpetrators of such
fraud.
Rubin said the improve-
ment was "highly visible" in
the dairy and meat res-
taurants in New York
state and, even more sig-
nificantly, in the Catskill
resort area.
Four years ago, he said,
division inspectors found
serious overt violations,
especially in the resort
areas, adding that during
Passover the same situation
existed in well-known dairy
restaurants.

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
According to projections by
the Central Bureau of
Statistics, the state of Israel
will have 5.5 million in-
habitants by the year 2000.
Some 28 percent of the
population will be non-
Jews, compared to the pre-
sent 19 percent.

dling.

Islam Seminar

HAIFA (JNI) — Some 35
scholars from seven coun-
tries, including Egypt, will
participate in an interna-
tional conference on "Islam,
Nationalism and
Radicalism in Egypt and
Sudan in the 20th Century"
next week at Haifa Univer-
sity.
