UN Body Tells Israel to Stop Bantam Issues I.J. Singer's
Building Dead Sea Canal
'Brothers' as a Paperback

UNITED - NATIONS
(JTA) — Israel was re-
quested to stop all moves
and preparations to build a
canal between the Mediter-
ranean and the Dead Sea.
The request was part of a
resolution approved by the
General Assembly's Special
Political Committee. The
vote was 114-2 with three
abstentions. The two nega-
tive votes were cast by Is-
rael and the United States.
The resolution also asked
all countries to refrain from
aiding the Israeli canal pro-
ject and asked for com-
pliance with this policy by
national and international
companies.
The Arab-sponsored
resolution called on the
Security Council to con-
sider the issue in order to
take steps to prevent Is-

rael from building the
canal.
The Arabs contended that
Israel is not permitted, as
an occupying power, to
change the physical nature
of the territory it holds in
violation of international
law. Part of the Mediterra-
nean - Dead Sea canal is to
be built on territory cap-
tured by Israel in the 1967
Six - Day War.
, Israel said it was under-
taking the canal project to
produce hydroelectric
power by channeling waters
from the Mediterranean to
the Dead Sea, 1,296 feet
below sea level.
Israel contended that the
project would benefit the
entire area, notably Jordan,
and would have no bearing
on the political status of the
Gaza Strip where the canal
will begin.
Meanwhile, a number of
leading European and
American engineering
companies have offered to
help build a power station
on the Dead Sea.

Qaddafi Blames
Zionists for Bias

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Libyan ruler Muammar
Qaddafi said that "Zionist
propaganda" was "behind
many of the allegations
about us in America." He
made his remarks in an in-
terview from Tripoli broad-
cast on ABC-TV's "This
Week With David
Brinkley" program:

Years before Isaac
Bashevis Singer attained
world popularity and was
awarded the Nobel Prize in
Literature, his brother, I.J.
(Israel Joshua) Singer was
already famous in the liter-
ary world. Noteworthy
among his works was "The
Brothers Ashkenazi," first
published in 1937.
It became a popular stage
play and the book was a best
seller.
In 1980, it was reissued
with an introduction by Irv-
ing Howe.
Now the new edition,
with the Howe introduc-
tion, is available as a

paperback issued by
Bantam Books.
The story is about two
brothers, twins but opposite
in nature, in activities, in
human reactions. One was a
schemer, the other gentle.
One was responsive to basic
human needs, the other was
calculating.
As they enter the world of
industry, in search of sec-
urity, there Howe's summ -
tion is also a commentary
Yiddish literature and the
authors.
