TEL AVIV (JTA) — De-
fense Minister Ariel Sharon
visited Yamit in northern
Sinai on Tuesday and re-
ported that law and order
have been restored. The
townspeople, dissatisfied
with the compensation the
government has offered
them to evacuate the region
when it is returned to Egypt
next April, had welded shut
the only gate for five days in
a gesture of protest. When
Sharon arrived the seal was
broken.

spoke with the various
committees representing
residents, shopkeepers, the
wives of army officers and
other special interest
groups.
Sharon was dispatched to
Yamit after an emergency
meeting of the Cabinet to
discuss the situation there.
In addition to sealing off the
town, which is surrounded
by a chain link fence, un-
known persons set fire to
several government build-
ings there last week. Police
said they found a large

cache of weapons and

town.
Deputy Premier David
Levy called for strong
measures against resi-
dents who try to hold the
town hostage in order to
force the government to
renege on its treaty obli-
gation to evacuate all of
Sinai.
For many Yamit resi-
dents, particularly owners
of local businesses, the issue
is not the evacuation but the
compensation the govern-
ment will pay them to relo-
cate. Others however are
motivated by politics and
ideology.
Their sentiments were
dramatized by Dr. Misha
Mishkan who began - a
hunger strike 65 days ago in
protest against the pending
evacuation. Mishkan an-
nounced this week he would
end his hunger strike due to
the personal intervention of
Sephardi Chief Rabbi
Ovadia Yosef.
Yosef promised to attend
a mass "stop the with-
drawal" rally at the West-
ern Wall in Jerusalem on
Wednesday.

Begin Transfers Power of
Office to Deputy Ehrlich

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Premier Menahem Begin
transferred the full powers
and authority of his office to
Deputy Premier Simha
Ehrlich last Week after he
was hospitalized for a bro-
ken hip, it was disclosed in a
lengthy letter the premier
dictated to Haaretz colum-
nist Yoel Marcus published
in that newspaper last Fri-
day.
Ehrlich, a leader of
Likud's Liberal Party wing,
chaired Sunday's Cabinet
meeting. According to offi-
cials he remains in charge of
the government for the pre-
sent.
Begin said he transferred
his authority to Ehrlich be-
cause he was in too much
pain to exercise his duties.
But the point Begin
stressed in his letter —
and the apparent reason
he offered it for publica-
tion at the newspaper's
discretion — was that he
has always been truthful
with the public about his
various ailments which

included two heart at-
tacks.
He chided the press for
criticizing past Israeli lead-
ers for misleading the pub-
lic on the subject of their
health.
Begin noted that often a
politician became indis-
posed by ill health but felt
he would recover with time
and be able to carry on.
However, political enemies-
often wanted to use th
health issue against him,
thus a measure of reticence
was justified.
Begin said that he had
known that former Premier
Golda Meir was suffering
from cancer 15-20 years be-
fore she died, but despite
their deep political differ-
ences he never used that
knowledge to undermine
her, although there were
some who had urged him "to
bring an end to her political
career."
Meanwhile, it was
stated that Begin may be
discharged from the hospi-
tal next week.
