He gave violin concerts at age 9 and conducted the NBC Orchestra, upon spe- cial invitation of Arturo Toscanini, when he was 11. Maazel has conducthd all the major orchestras in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and the Soviet Union. At the end of this season, he will re- tire from his post as con- ductor of the Cleveland * * Symphony Orchestra, a post he has held for the past 10 years. In September 1982, Maazel will become director general of the Vienna State Opera. He will be the first American to hold this posi- tion. Among his recent honors are the Legion d'Honneur, presented to him by the French government on his 51st birthday "for his con- tribution to the musical life in France."
