Archeology, Rabbinical Politics Exposed

Seeking a fourth five-
year term as Ashkenazic
Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi
Shlomo Goren is in the
limelight with his leader-
ship in opposition to ar-
cheological activities which
are frequently interrupted
at his instigation.
In a revealing article, "Is-
rael's Flying Rabbi," Rabbi
Goren's current activities in
opposition to the excava-
tions are described in
Newsweek magazine as fol-
lows:

it wasn't a bird, it wasn't

from cliff to cliff above the
Dead Sea last week was
Shlomo Goren, 65, Chief
Rabbi of Israel's Ashkenazi
Jews. Suspended by a 100-
foot rope from an Israeli Air
Force helicopter, Rabbi
Goren landed on a narrow
ledge and ducked into the
Cave of Horror, where ar-
cheologists found a pile of 40
skeletons 26 years ago. The
scientists identified the
bones as the remains of
Jewish rebels, led by the
legendary Bar Kokhba, who
fell in 135 A.D. in a last
stand against the Roman
legions of the Emperor Had-
rian.
The rabbi accused the
archeologists of remov-
ing the bones, violating a
Jewish religious law
which says that bones of
warriors • should be
buried on the battlefield.
Reciting the Psalms of
King David, he crawled
into the depths of the
cave and, as expected,
found nothing. 'The
bones have not been re-
turned,' he announced
when he came back.
`What happened to the
Bar Kohkba heroes is an
outrage.'
"Rabbi Goren's complaint
outraged the more profes-
sional archeologists of Is-
rael. 'Doesn't he have any-
thing better to do?' sighed

The CFS-88S Transound Stereo is designed for people who take their stereo
seriously: to the country or from room to room. Its super portable—the
speakers fold in to give you an entertaining suitcase—white the emphasis is on
super sound. Think of it as stereo with a handle. And think of the features. The
speakers detach for excellent stereo separation. The tuner gives you AM. FM.
plus shortwave! A cassette player also records. And the soft-touch controls
respond instantly. Automatic Music Sensor* finds your favorite tunes. And you
can even connect a turntable for more musical variety:

Reagan Budget
Hit by Baltimore
Religious Leaders

BALTIMORE — The
Reagan Administration
social and military spend-
ing policies have been
criticized by religious lead-
ers in the Baltimore area.
In a letter to the Presi-
dent, 14 Christian and
Jewish leaders said the
Administration's budget
program was "moving our
government away from its
role of protecting the
economic and social rights
of all its people." Rabbi
Mark G. Loeb, president of
the Baltimore Board of
Rabbis, was among the sig-
ners.

The first requisite of a
good citizen in this Republic_
of ours is that he shall be
able and willing to pull his
weight.
— Theodore Roosevelt

Hebrew University School
of Archeology. And Prof.
Yigael Yadin, who dis-
covered one of the two Bar
Kokhba caves 20 years ago,
heatedly denied that the
bones had in any way been
abused. 'He's wasting gov-
ernment funds to crawl
through caves which a
whole group of us minutely
searched for 30 days, 10
hours a day,' Yadin said.
'Goren's got a necrophiliac
complex — and he likes pub-
licity.'
"Rabbi Goren susptcts
the archeologists dispatch-
ed the Bar Kokhba bones to
various foreign univer-
sities, a double desecration
of Jewish religious laws.
The archeologists say that
the bones are still in Israel
in the custody of pathologi-
cal institutes and the gov-
ernment's Department of
Antiquities.
"Whatever the case,
Rabbi Goren says he had
located 17 of the
skeletons and he now
wants to give them a state
funeral. 'We'll bury the
bones above the caves
and top the mount with a
huge obelisk, which will
be visible from the Dead
to the Red Sea,' says Go-
ren.
" want a huge funeral
attended by members of Is-
rael's Army, Air Force and
Navy and by children of
every school in the country.'
Prime Minister Menahem

Begin is sympathetic to the
idea. And if the headlines
help Goren win an unprece-
dented fourth extension of
his five-year term of office
as Chief Rabbi, who's going
to complain about that?"
