The Cashvan Center,
with treatment rooms, a
surgery unit, and
laboratories housing
sophisticated veterinary
equipment, is an important
addition to the university's
Barbara and Jerry Isan
Center for Comparative
Medicine.
Established through
Herbert Cashvan, a long-
time resident of Virginia
Beach and the owner of
Cashvan Arabian Farms —
the center will be under the
direction of Prof. Daniel
Cohen, head of Ben-
Gurion's Department of
Comparative Medicine and
Kreitman Foundation Pro-
fessor of Comparative
Medicine.
Renowned for their
beauty, speed and nerve,
Arabian horses are of
Middle Eastern origin
and since before the time
of Mohammed, have fig-
ured prominently in the
turbulent history of the
Holy Land. Highly prized
for their grace and sub-
erb performance in
battle, the elegant
thoroughbreds were
kept, bred and traded in
Israel throughout the
centuries.
But, by the end of World
War I, the number of Ara-
bians had drastically di-
minished due to the effects
of cross breeding and expor-
tation, and by 1950 had vir-
tually disappeared from
modern Israel. Today, it is
Poland that is one of the
major breeding centers with
exports to Europe and the
United States of $3 million
annually.
