Bailey E. Smith, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, arrived in Is- rael Tuesday for a week- long visit under the au- spices of the Anti- Defamation League of Bnai Brith. The trip, which has been endorsed by the Israeli gov- ernment, has been called an example of the growing ef- fort by Israel to seek out support in unlikely seg- ments of American society. Smith, who created a fur- ror last year when he said, "God Almighty does not hear the prayer of a Jew," will meet with Prime Minis- ter Menahem Begin and other Israeli officials in an -effort to better educate him- self about the Jewish state. The ADL's contacts with Smith began shortly after his anti-Semitic statements. League offi- cials in New York met with him and he issued several apologies. "I deeply regret any hurt that may have come by remarks credited to me," he wrote to Nathan Perlmutter, national di- rector of the league. "I have a great desire for better understanding with you and your people." Israel is now giving spe- cial attention to cultivating evangelical Christians, many of whom defend the Israeli nation for biblical reasons. Begin has formed a friendly relationship with the Rev. Jerry Falwell, head of the Moral Majority. - DANNY BRESSLER Son of Roz & Lou Bressler Beth Achim Oct. 24th RICHARD ALAN FAIR Son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Fair Temple Beth Jacob Sept. 26th Summit Decried The effort has been inten- sified as relations with the American Government have deteriorated. Custom- ary liberal support in the U.S. has fallen away and the Moral Majority has be- come a political force. The Israeli quest for evangelical support has distressed some U.S. Jews, who regard the fundamentalist movement as anti-democratic and po- tentially anti-Semitic.
