rael" and "K'tonton on an
Island in the Sea."
As is evidenced in these
titles, each of the books is an
adventure, and in all in=
stances they are Jewishly
emphasized.
Special importance,
therefore, attaches in the
newest of the K'tontons,
just issued by the Jewish
Publication Society of
America, "K'tonton in the
Circus — A Hanuka Ad-
venture."
Becoming available on
the immediate eve of
Hanuka, the JPS performs a
special purpose: it increases
the merits of the K'tonton
series and provides an im-
portant book as a choice for
Hanuka gifts.
Like all of the previous
K'tontons, the new Hanuka
adventure is not only
Jewishly emphasized. Its
delight also is in the illus-
trations by Marilyn Hirsh.
Sadie Rose Weilerstein
has been a leading author of
Jewish children's books and
short stories for over 50
years. K'tonton, the best
known of her characters,
made his first appearance in
a story published in the Sep-
tember 1930 issue of Out-
look magazine.
Mrs. Weilerstein re-
ceived a - special Jewish
Book Council Award for
her "cumulative contri-
bution to Jewish juvenile
writing" and the
Women's League for
Conservative Judaism's
Yovel Award "in recog-
nition of her outstanding
and pioneer contribu-
tions to the world of
books for Jewish chil-
dren." She was given the
Association of Jewish
Libraries' 1980 Sydney
Taylor Award for her
contribution to Jewish
children's literature.
Marilyn Hirsh_ is the
author-illustrator of more
than 20 books for children.
Among her books are four
that she illustrated in India
while serving with the
Peace Corps. Her many
books of Jewish interest
earned for her the 1979
Sydney Taylor Award. She
also was the illustrator of
"The Best of K'tonton."
The Weilerstein series
even provides an introduc-
tion to Hebrew nomencla-
ture. The title of her charm-
ing children's books are
from Kton which means
small, and the K'tonton
applies to very small.
In the new book there is,
as in the previous, adven-
ture without limit. The
young hero had arrived to
the delight of his parents as
a one-inch tall character.
He grew to four inches and
in the circus he was also as
important as the many par-

ticipating clowns, actors,
entertainers.
He was abducted into
the circus and when time
for release came it ap-
proached Hanuka.
Homesick K'tonton was
keeping track of the calen-
dar and he knew Hanuka
was nearing. The sword-
swallower and the Wild
Man of Borneo, the circus
chief, their associates,
notice that K'tonton is upset
and worried. They ques-
tioned him, learned the rea-
son, were enamored by the

thought of latkes which
caused them to smack their
lips — and that led to K'ton-
ton's release and return to
his home to enjoy the Feast
of Lights.
In the process, K'tonton
explains to his new friends
the meaning of Hanuka.
K'tonton was given a
Hanuka party at the circus
but the homesickness pre-
vailed and his new friends
made it possible for him to
be carried to his aunt in
North Carolina by way of a
carrier pigeon, to be re-

united with his family.
Later, settled in Israel,
K'tonton was able to do
the circus tricks and
entertain children in
Jerusalem, as a reminder
of the many qualities he
acquired while away
from home at the circus,
This is what makes the
Hanuka K'tonton so valu-
able as a Jewish holiday
book. This is what lends
glory to the Weilerstein
book series entitled K'ton-
ton.
