Peter G. Peterson, chair- man of the board of the major investment banking firm and Secretary of Com- merce in the Nixon Ad- ministration, recalled that in 1973-1974, the cutoff of Detroit Area Retail Kosher Meat Dealers Assoc. only 600,000 barrels of oil a day created turmoil and long lines at gas stations. "That was a mere 'vascu- lar incident' compared to the economic and political struggle that would affect this country if such a thing were to happen today when Ike are importing mil- lion barrels a day from the Mideast," he told an Ameri- can Jewish Congress audi- ence at the organization's annual Stephen S. Both Israel and the Saudis were trying to keep secret the fact that an Is- raeli gunboat had run ag- round in Saudi waters in the Red Sea. Israel did not want the Saudis to attack the ves- sel and the Saudis did not want the hardline Arabs to accuse it of collaborating with Israel.
