U.S. Oil Policy Called Grotesque

NEW YORK — The head
of Lehman Brothers Kuhn
Loeb Inc. has charged that
American foreign policy is
"mortgaged" to oil and the
government's "grotesque"
energy policy has failed to
lessen the nation's vulnera-
bility to an import cutoff.
Peter G. Peterson, chair-
man of the board of the
major investment banking
firm and Secretary of Com-
merce in the Nixon Ad-
ministration, recalled that
in 1973-1974, the cutoff of

Detroit Area Retail Kosher
Meat Dealers Assoc.

only 600,000 barrels of oil a
day created turmoil and
long lines at gas stations.
"That was a mere 'vascu-
lar incident' compared to
the economic and political
struggle that would affect
this country if such a thing
were to happen today when
Ike are importing mil-
lion barrels a day from the
Mideast," he told an Ameri-
can Jewish Congress audi-
ence at the organization's
annual Stephen S. Wise
Awards dinner.

Secret Leaked

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
The U.S. leaked secret in-
formation to the press dur-
ing the recent debate over
sale of
the proposed
AWACS radar planes and
Sidewinder missiles to
Saudi Arabia in an effort to
portray the Saudis as mod-
erate, Israeli officials say.
Both Israel and the
Saudis were trying to keep
secret the fact that an Is-
raeli gunboat had run ag-
round in Saudi waters in the
Red Sea. Israel did not want
the Saudis to attack the ves-
sel and the Saudis did not
want the hardline Arabs to
accuse it of collaborating
with Israel.
