JERUSALEM — The Mehane Yehuda market in Jerusalem is a place with a very special magic, a par- ticular expression of the in- gathering of the Jewish people, according to a recent article in Israel Scene Mag- azine. . Located on Jaffa Road, near the central business district, it was originally called Shuk Halva'a V'Hisahon after the com- pany which arranged_ the • financing for its construc- tion. It was built in 1928 as a complex of 120 shops and its present name derives from the quarter in which it is located — -Mehane Yehuda. This quarter, along with other adjoining ones, such as Mizkeret Moshe and Ohel Moshe, was estab- lished in the 1880s as part of the movement to set up new Weak men, often, from the very principle of their weakness, derive a certain susceptibility, delicacy, and taste, which render them, in these particulars, much superior to men of stronger and more consistent minds, who laugh at them. —Greville DANCE PARTIES are our specialty, high quality our performance. WE ARE TAKING HOLIDAY' ORDERS FOR XMAS & NEW YEARS EVE CALL ABOUT OUR FREE DELIVERY 354-2666 WE NOW CARRY A COMPLETE LINE OF GROCERIES After a while, you get to know the people there: Re- uven, of Iraqi descent, sells pickled olives, peppers and cucumbers and has de- veloped a series of rapid-fire hand movements for scoop- ing up spoonfuls of olives into plastic bags, adding juice and twirling a rubber band around the tops. It's all done in the blink of an eyelid. Then there's the "colo- nel," a gingerhaired, light- skinned man with a mous- - tache who looks like an ex- British soldier who some- how got left behind when the British Army went home in 1948. His stall,, right in the center of the- main walkway, creates a jam of people on either side and is always covered with a vague assortment of brightly colored clothes and trinkets, although he rarely makes a sale. The calmest time is in the early morning when the vendors arrive, open their stalls and arrange the fruit and vegetables on racks: Steaming glasses of Tur- kish coffee are never far away as they chatter quietly among themselves of the previous night's bas- ketball game on TV or the latest neighborhood gossip. By mid-morning the crowds are there iriforce, the place is buzzing. Now there- no time for small-talk. The vendors shout out their wares and prices as loudly as they can. They weigh out veg- etables on old-fashioned scales, take money from three people at a time, scold the lady who insist:s- on squeezing all the soft tomatoes ... until 7 p.m., the pace is fast and furi- ous. On Friday, after having made their final sales of the week, the vendors begin taking unsold stock back into their storerooms and closing them up for the weekend, pulling down the steel shutters and hurrying off home. By 5 p.m. the place is des- erted. Only the cats are left to scratch around among the discarded scraps of veg- etables. The people — the life of the shuk — are at home, welcoming the Sab- bath to Jerusalem. Israel's Tennis Centers Bring Game to Poorer Neighborhoods World Zionist Press Service Mon.
