Another couple stayed home with a daugh- ter who was getting di- vorced. Some were out of town. It was a sad New Year's Eve not being to- gether. "One New . Year's Eve memory starts running into another. We re- member when a few couples ushered in the year at the Statler Hotel. The rest celebrated in a room at the old Book Cadillac at a party spon- sored by a charitable organization. We later compared notes. The consensus was it would have been more fun if all of us were together to toast the new year. And we vowed never again to break the chain of friend- ship and festivities. "So when the Michigan Inn opened in Southfield and the manager offered a special weekend deal for New Year's Eve, we all made reservations. The spe- cial included dinner, a room for the night and breakfast. But some of the guys in ou; party thought it was silly to sleep in a hotel room. Others stayed overnight and threw a cocktail party in one of the suites. But something was lacking. "Through the yeafs, many of us decided it wasn't worth $50 a couple and in- creasingly higher to sip and sup and make whoopee in a restaurant with wall-to- wall merry-makers on Dec. 31. Spending $100 fora New Year's weekend at a hotel didn't seem worth it. And as prices soared, the spirit of the new year plunged. "Somewhere along the way we decided New Year's Eve wasn't as exciting as it was cracked up to be. Everyone tried so hard to have a good time, expecta- tions were high and we were often disappointed. We seemed to have more fun on an ordinary night when things weren't so hectic. "We're older now and wiser. We don't plan too far ahead anymore. We never know what the new year will bring so we may even usher it in quietly with a toast for health, peace and happiness. "One of the last New Year's Eves we remember spending together was when we saw 'Superman' and had a late supper at the elegant Jacques restaurant in Bingham Farms. "We don't know what we're doing this New Year's Eve. And somehow, it doesn't seem that important to us. But we'll probably think of someplace to go and welcome 1982 — hopefully together." QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS .. . in the knowledge and opinion of Healthy Jones' Joan Wit- tenberg. My child loves popsi- cies. Are there any with- out sugar? Natural Nectar came out with a great popsicle made with honey and all fresh fruit juices. It is really de- licious. Is there anything like a natural toothpaste? Yes, there are several different brands, regular or with fluoride. Is there any natural in- sect repellant? Yes, it's called Buzz Off and it is a blend of natural oils and herbs specifically formulated to repel such in- sects as flies, fleas and mos- quitoes. How about a recipe for a malted milk? The name of the recipe is frosted banana malt. One cup of milk, one ripe banana quartered, one tablespoon malted milk powder, one large scoop of vanilla ice cream (from the health food store) and one egg. Blend for 15 seconds and serve. Why is sea salt better than regular salt? Refined bleached over- heated salt which pours eas- ily is much higher in sodium chloride and deficient in the dozens of minerals and trace elements found in natural mined sea salt. Is is possible to prevent senility? Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, has written a book called "Nutrients to Age Without Senility." He feels that senility is a form of malnut rition and can be avoided or even reversed by sound nut- ritional planning and therapy. Does Vitamin C act as a laxative? Yes, it is 'very helpful for that and, of course, many, many other things. It is one of my favorite vitamins. What minerals are most required by the elderly? Calcium, magnesium and zinc. Is milk good for you? It is basically a good food. It supplies lots of minerals and numerous vitamins. However, some humans do not digest milk well and then it is probably wise to avoid it. Allergy to milk and other dairy products is widespread and the symp- toms may vary from post- nasal drip, migraine headaches, hyperactivity, depression and severe anx- iety attacks. If you think you are allergic, have a food allergy test. Where did you get all of your recipes for your menu? I traveled around the country, talked to other chefs of natural food restau- rants, read, experimented and still keep trying to im- prove all of the time. There are lots of really good natural food cookbooks on the market today.
