THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Youth Conference Dec. 4 at Cobo
LISTENING
POST
.
- IF AN ADVERTISING
agency can't show its clients
how to throw a party, who
can? ... The client in this
case was Yaffee Berline,
Inc.... and the agency was
also Yaffee Berline.
Event was big hoopla
celebrating the first an-
niversary of togetherness
for Fred Yaffee and Jim
Berline . . . now on the ninth
floor of the Honeywell Bldg.
on Nine Mile ... after open-
ing Nov. 10, 1980 in the
Prudential Bldg. on Ever-
green.
Naturally, the party was
catered by one of their
clients, too ... Hyatt Re-
gency of Dearborn ... hot
and cold hors d'oeuvres,
shrimp, duck, roast beef;
pastries, etc.
Al Vinocur,
vice
president and creative
supervisor, went to eat
one of the hors d'oeuvres
and discovered it was a
goldfish in a centerpiece
bowl ... Quick-witted Al
remarked, "I wouldn't
eat the goldfish because I
don't work for scale!" ...
Al, with Yaffee Berline
since Dec. 1980, was re-
cent winner of the first
"Person - In Motion"
award by the agency ...
He and wife Anne get a
weekend at Boyne Moun-
tain.
On those very fine Mur-
ray's Discount Auto Stores
radio spots that have be-
come. so popular, Al had a
voice in mind ... He called
California ... auditioned
people on the phone ,... A
voice in the background
asked if he could try out ...
Al heard him and said,
"That's the man!" ... The
voice sounded familiar ...
was that of Canton the
doorman on former "Rhoda"
TV show . . . Lorenzo Music.
Yaffee Berline began
with 11 people ... and now
has about 25 ... including
one of "the biggest men" in
ad agency business ... 6'5"
Bob Popa, senior vice
president in charge of public
relations.
The only time Bob likes
Greektown or. Chinese res-
taurants is when he and
wife Phyllis have an argu-
ment ... "I know he's say-
ing 'I'm sorry' when he says,
'Let's go to Greektown or.a
Chinese restaurant." ...
Phyllis' mother taught Bob
how to make chopped liver
"But I make the
schmaltz'," she says.
Adeline "Addie" Gag-
leard, office manager,
started with Fred a
year-and-a-half after he
began his own agency in
1959 at the old Fox Thea-
ter Bldg. ... Michelle
Abel Horowitz, vice
president and media di-
rector, has a master's de-
gree in economics ... and
hubby Jay attends Uni-
versity of Michigan Med-
ical School;
