Eve, Dec. 15, 1981— 8 P.M. at their home 15927 Hilton, Southfield, Mich. Chairman Marvin W. Berlin Guest Speaker Rabbi Yetzchok Meier Schorr The son of the late Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Gedalya Schor,( Z.L. American Rabbis (CCAR), expressed that restrained optimism in a telephone interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. His comment was an elaboration of his president's column in the October issue of the CCAR news letter in which he de- scribed a meeting in New York City Sept. 13 at the hotel- Begin was staying at during his most recent visit to the United States. Attending that meeting were Donald Day, board chairman of the (Reform) Union of American He- brew Congregations (UAHC); Rabbi Alexan- der Schindler, UAHC president; Rabbi Joseph Glaser, CCAR executive vice president; and Schaalman. Schaalman wrote that the Reform leaders had asked Begin for the. Sept. 13 meet- ing "to put before him our urgent feelings concerning the proposed amendment to the Law of Return, the te- nure of religious pluralism _ in the state of Israel" and the issue of governmental funding of American Re- form Judaism's planned second kibutz. The proposed amendment to the Law of Return would add the phrase "al pi Halakha" — according to Halakha — which non- Orthodox rabbis have Eygptian Official Thanks Israelis JERUSALEM (JTA) — Egypt's Ambassador to Is- rael, Saad Mortada, has is- sued a statement officially thanking all Israelis who expressed their condolences over the death of President Anwar Sadat last month. The Egyptian leader was gunned down by assassins Oct. 6. The statement added, "The embassy stresses that the Arab Republic of Egypt, under the leadership of President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak, continues the process of peace which was begun by the late president. It is determined to continue the efforts to ful- fill the wishes of the region's peoples for an overall and just peace." Normalization? CAIRO (ZINS) — Sedmar Perry, Cairo correspondent for the Israeli newspaper Al Hamishmar, recently wrote that it may be a long time before there is a true nor- malization of relations be- tween Egypt and Israel. He said the Egyptian businessmen remain reluc- tant to deal with Israel be- fore the final Israeli pull- out from Sinai in April and as long as the Palestinian problem is not settled. He wrote that Israeli vis- itors to Egypt can still see expressions of anti- Semitism and bitterness and that Egyptian trade unions actively pressure their members to have no contacts with Israel. argued would be applied by the dominant Orthodox rabbinate to reject conver- sions of would-be immig- rants to Israel who had been converted by a Reform or Conservative rabbi. The American Reform and Con- servative rabbis have strongly opposed the pro- posed amendment. Schaalman wrote that Begin left no doubt that he was "personally committed to the amendment," and that he had entered agree- ments with Orthodox ele- ments in the formation of his second government "which obliges him to work for the introduction of the amendment" in the Knes- set. "Mr. Begin made it very clear that he would not do so unless he was assured of a Majority" in the Knesset "and expressed the opinion that at this time he did not see such a majority in the offing," Schaalman wrote. One of these, the work of Prof. S. Malkin and Dr. Y. Koren, is an off-line system for the optimization of grinding processes. It is based on a strategy that aims for maximum metal removal rates, subject to constraints of surface finish and burning. A software package de- veloped by Dr. Oren Masory will work in conjunction with existing CNC systems, to enhance work rates. In the normal CNC program, feed-rates and cutting speeds are pre-determined by the programmer, on the basis of his own experience and expertise. Dr. Moshe Shpitalni has developed a new system for the determination of crucial parameters in electrochem- ical grinding methods. This technique combines the mechanical action of a grinding wheel with an electrochemical reaction, which also removes mate- rial from the workpiece.
