JNF Researchers Developing Perfect Pine'

By YEHONATHAN
TOMMER

Jewish National Fund

JERUSALEM — Scien-
tists are at work in Israel
creating a perfect pine tree,
one that will be fast-
growing, tall and straight,
drought resistant and im-
mune to common tree dis-
eases.
It will have a thick trunk
and will produce industrial
timber that can compete
with the best European
varieties.
Israeli forest researchers
believe the day is fast ap-
proaching when pine trees
planted by the Jewish Na-
tional Fund will be raised
from properly selected seeds
and will be perfectly suited
to Israel's dry climate and
generally poor soil condi-
tions. It would be a type of
tree that could also do well

in the similar soil condi-
tions of several Arab coun-
tries.
The break-through in de-
veloping this tree came sev-
eral years ago when a
strange disease struck large
sections of the JNF's 30-
year old pine forest along
the road to Jerusalem at a
section called Shaar Hagay.
"We have since iden-
tified the disease and the
JNF took appropriate ac-
tion to renew the dam-
aged parts of the forests,"
says Dr. Rene Karschon,
head of the research team
of eight tree geneticists at
the JNF's Forestry Di-
vision Experimental and
Research Station at
Ilanot.
For the past year, the
Ilanot station has worked
full-time on relating the
pathology findings to their
effort to develop a new pine.
"Israeli foresters have
long known that the so-
called Aleppo pine, which
covers much of the Carmel
Range near Haifa, Galilee,
the Judean Hills and the
Hebron foothills down to
Beersheva, in large part ac-
tually derives from Vie-
nna," Karshon explains.
"The Aleppo pine is consid-

ered the hardiest and best-
suited to the region.
Large quantities of pine
seeds were also brought in
from Mediterranean coun-
tries, but no record of where
these saplings from Europe
and North Africa were
plant.ed were kept. Over the
years, the strains cross-
pollinated, making it im-
possible to identify their
origins and difficult to iso-
late the Aleppo pines."
Karschon's JNF re-
search team is investigat-
ing 17 characteristics in
the metabolism of the
pine tree. It recently
completed complicated
laboratory tests aimed at
devising a statistical code
to be used in identifying
the genuine Aleppo pine
from other types and
hybrids. The data is cur-
rently being processed
and it is hoped that the
researchers can soon
move onto the next stage
of cultivating seedlings of
the selected type.
Some 1,000 foreign types
of trees are planted at the
Ilanot arboretum. Most of
them come from the dry
climates of the United
States and Australia. Ilanot
has obtained over 200 ape-

cies of eucalyptus and 60
strains of acacias from these
countries. It is in this arbo-
retum that the Aleppo pine
will be grown experimen-
tally once it is isolated from
the seed selections that are
now being collected all over
Israel.
In addition to the con-
trolled conditions at Ilanot,
the Israeli-bred variety of
Aleppo pine will be grown in
various parts of the country
under natural conditions.
With luck, it will take and
become a permanent and
flourishing member of Is-
rael's flora.

Wiesenthal Plan Designed
to Speed War Crimes Cases

NEW YORK — A pro-
posal that would allow
Americans accused of Nazi
war crimes to be extradited
to Germany to stand trial
while bypassing the long
procedure of stripping them
of their U.S. citizenship is
under consideration by the
U.S. and West Germany.
If approved, the proposal
by Vienna-based Nazi
hunter Simon Wiesenthal,
would reverse a longstand-
ing U.S. policy of not seek-
ing extradition of non-
Germans accused of war
crimes.
Allan A. Ryan, director of
the Justice Department's
office of special investiga-
tion, which is responsible
for investigating and pro-

secuting suspected Nazi
war criminals living in the
United States, said the pro-
posal was being studied by
officials in both countries.
