of which led to a charge that
six Klansmen and Nazis
had murdered five Com-

• The emergence of
women in Ku Klux Klan ac-

presence was detected when

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Jewish National Fund
will this winter launch a
large-scale afforestation
operation on the eastern
slopes of Jerusalem.
The project, one of the
largest afforestation tasks
undertaken by the JNF in
recent years, will spread
over 2,500 acres on a moun-
taineous terrain. It is
scheduled to be completed
in seven years.
The new forest will ex-
tend along the eastern sub-
urb of the capital, linking
the existing Jerusalem for-
est on the Western side of
the city with a greenbelt
encircling Jerusalem.
Others involved in the proj-
ect are the Israel Land Ad-
ministration and the
municipality of Jerusalem.

The gasoline bomb caused
no injuries or damage.
Such -measures were
reserved for more serious
incidents of violence in
the past. Shemtov ob-
served that "collective
punishment will cause a
further deterioration of
the situation in the ad-
ministrated areas. It will
tarnish Israel's image
and not improve its secu-

Sharon told reporters last
week that Israel's policy on
the West Bank is to treat
"gently" those Arabs who
cooperate with Israel and to
crack down harder than
ever on those who do not.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Labor Alignment last
week sharply criticized the
government for what it
called "unjust over-
reaction" to the wave of
anti-Israel protests and
sporadic incidents of vio-
lence on the West Bank.
Victor Shemtov of
Mapam, acting chairman of
the Knesset's Foreign Af-
fairs and Security Commit-
tee, summoned Defense
Minister Ariel Sharon to
appear before the commit-
tee to explain the new pol-
icy.

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
significant number of milit-
ant Ku Klux Klan activists
have broken away from the
main bodies and, joined by
known Nazis, are planning
more drastic action than the
standard Klan cross burn- -
ings and rallies.
That is one of the findings
of a six-month long investi-
gation by the American
Jewish Committee into cur-
rent Klan activities. Also
reported were:
• Dissatisfaction with
"moderate" Klan leader-
ship, leading, in one in-
stance, to a suspected at-

military measures as "brut-'
ality." Michael Bar-Zohar, a
member of Labor's hawkish
wing, criticized them on
grounds that they were inef-
fective.
Meanwhile, Chalie Biton,
a Haddash (Communist)
MK, created an uproar in
the Knesset and was tossed
out of the chamber after he
compared Sharon to Hitler.
Deputy Speaker Meir
Cohen of Likud's Herut
wing, demanded that Biton
retract his remarks. Biton
refused but agreed- to sit
down. Cohen ordered him
removed and burly ushers
escorted him out of the
chamber.
