JEWISH NEWS Arab Moderate Attacked by Terrorist Dies of Wound JERUSALEM (JTA) — Yussuf Al-Khatib, an Arab moderate shot by terrorists last week, died of his wounds Sunday night at the Hadassah Medical Center here. Al-Khatib, 60, was the chairman of the Ramallah Region Farmers Associa- tion which cooperated with Israeli authorities on the West Bank. He was ambushed last week while driving to Ramallah with his son, Khazom, 23, who was killed instantly by a fusillade of bullets. The Palestine Libera- tion Organization in Be- irut claimed responsibil- ity for the act and re- peated death threatS to other Arab moderates. Mustapha Doudin, head of the Hebron Region Far- mers Association, has been under 24-hour guard since the assault on the Al- Khatib. His colleague, Bishara Kawmissiya of Bethlehem, said that the village asso- ciations would continue to function despite the assas- sination of Al-Khatib and the threats to others. The associations were es- tablished with encourage- ment of the Israeli Military Government to counter pro-PLO elements on the West Bank. Scattered incidents were reported on the West Bank over the weekend. Protests over the demolition of three houses in Beit Sahour and one in Bethlehem last week continued. Mayor Hanna Al-Afrash of Beit Sahour appeared at a Rakah (Communist) Party sponsored press conference yesterday to demand com- pensation. The houses were blown up because members of the woning families al- legedly threw gasoline bombs at Israeli vehicles. If you are content you have enough to live upon with comfort. • Yamit Protestors Meet Begin JERUSALEM (JTA) — Premier Menahem Begin had a stormy meeting in his office last week with three Yamit settlers who are de- manding that Israel refuse to complete its withdrawal from Sinai next April as it is required to do under the terms of the Egyptian- Israeli peace treaty. Begin agreed to. receive the protestors. One of them, Mischa Mishcon, has been on a liquid diet for 40 days to protest against the impend- ing pull-out. He was carried into the Premier's office on a BONN (JTA) — The Palestine Liberation Or- ganization has been prom- ised a substantial increase in military assistance from East Germany. According to well in- formed sources in West Be- rlin, the East Germans made that pledge to a PLO delegation new visiting East Berlin. East German military experts will be sent to Lebanon to train the PLO in the use of new weapons systems received from the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact countries, the sources said. The sources noted that the PLO delegation, headed by. Kahlil Al-Wazir, whose title is "Vice Chief Com- mander of the Armed Forces of the Palestinian Revolu- tion," is receiving consider- able attention in the government-controlled East German media. Now the emphasis is on the military relationship. Wazir's picture appeared on the front page of Neues Deutchsland, official organ angrily accused Begin of "betraying the people of Israel." Begin reportedly told the three men that he would "not be lectured by you about love of Eretz Yisrael." He also made it clear that he would not permit govern- ment policy to be influenced by hunger strikers, what- ever their political persua- sion. Mishcon demanded that Begin submit the Sinai withdrawal to a national re- ferendum. Begin asked Mishcon to end his fast, but he refused. Following the meeting he was taken to a local hospital for an infusion of glucose. The current mandate ex- pires Nov. 30. The vote was 14-0 in favor and no absten- tions. The People's Republic of China, which opposes UN peacekeeping operations, did not take part in the vote, as usual.
