are all either heroes or vic-
tims, facing restrictive

not one mention of the ter-

WASHINGTON — A re-
cent Novosti Press Agency
story released by the Soviet
Embassy in Washington
claims that traditional
High Holiday services were
held in more than 100
synagogues throughout the
USSR this year and that
numerous Minyans also
conducted holiday services
for Soviet Orthodox Jews.
According to the article,
"The renovation of the Mos-
cow Choral Synagogue was
completed just before the
holidays. Offices were re-
arranged, ornaments of the
Aron Kodesh (in which the
Torah scrolls are kept) were
renovated. The synagogue
received from Hungary

ritual ornaments for the
holiday service: palm-tree
tops, special citrus fruit,
myrtle branches and var-
ious accessories for the con-
gregation.
"On the holiday (Rosh
Hashana) no less than 5,000
people attended the Moscow
Choral Synagogue, situated
in the center of the Soviet
capital. Before the holiday
religious people brought
kosher meat and poultry.
The meat was cut at the
synagogue, and the poultry
at the Krasnogorsk poultry
factory near Moscow.
"The kosher cafeteria
at the synagogue is fes-
tive. Here the Yeshiva
students have their

breakfast and lunch, as
do the synagogue per-
sonnel and some elderly
members of the congre-
gation who find it dif-
ficult to cook such food at
home.

"The cafeteria serves all
the traditional dishes of
Jewish cuisine. Prayers are
said before and after every
meal."

Explanation for Synagogue Tradition

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.)

Kohanim (descendants of
the priestly family)3often
come up to the platform in
the synagogue, spread open
their hands and pronounce
the blessing of the Almighty
upon the copgregants.
The basis for this tradi-
tion is the biblical com-
mandment (in the Book of
Numbers, Chap. 6) which
commands the Kohanim to
do so. A number of reasons
are given for this practice.
Some claim that the
Kohanim, who in the Tem-
ple days of old performed
the rituals in the Holy Tem-
ple, were considered closer
to the Almighty and
an thus
the benediction is expressed

All arts acknowledge that

then only we know cer-
tainty, when we can define;
for definition is that Which
refines the pure essence of
things from the circum-
stance.
—Milton

through them (Sefer ha-
Chinuch). Others claim that •
the Kohanim were symbolic
of mankind as a whole.Hav-
ing them pronounce the
blessing indicates that the
blessings of the Almighty
are transmitted through
human beings who aid each
other and wish each other
well.
It is also claimed that the
Kohanim spread out their
hands to signify that every
human being should be a
helping hand to his fellow
human being. While it is
certainly true that the Al-
mighty could have bestowed
help to mankind by himself
without any one's help, He
directed his blessings
through the hands of fellow

humans to make people
understand that no blessing
is complete without one
human helping another.

A monarchy is a mer-
chantman which sails well,
but will sometimes strike on
a rock, and go to the bottom;
a republic is a. raft which
will never sink, but then
your feet are always in the
water.
