Holocaust Center Dedication
to Hear World Gathering Leader

Ernest W. Michel, who
chaired the June 1981
World Gathering of Jewish
Holocaust Survivors in Is-
rael, will be the guest
speaker at ground-breaking
cerenronies for the
Holocaust Memorial Center
of Detroit.
The event takes place
1:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the
Jewish Community Center.
Born in Germany, Michel

young boy in 1939. He sur-
vived incarceration at sev-
eral concentration camps,
including Auschwitz,
Bena-Monowitz, Buchen-
wald and Berga.

and columnist at the Port
Huron, 'Mich., Times
Herald, and lectured
widely on his experiences
in Europe.
He served as an interpre-
ter for the United States
military government and
covered the first Nurem-
berg War Crimes Trial as a
special correspondent for
the German News Agency.
Currently, Michel is
executive vice president
and campaign director of
the United Jewish Appeal of
Greater New York.
Construction of the
11,970 - square - foot
Holocaust Memorial Center
of Detroit will be adjacent to
the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
Designed by architect
Leonard G. Siegal of
Siegal/Tuomaala Associ-
ates, the HMC will contain
designations to
memorialize the many hun-
dreds of communities de-
stroyed in the Holocaust.
HMC Director Rabbi
Charles H. Rosenzveig
will oversee the acquisi-
tion and exhibition of ar-
chival and graphic data,
survivors' oral histories
and other materials re-
lated to the Holocaust
theme. Educational pro-
grams will be developed
for diverse groups within
the community.
